ABSTRACT: Jesus of Nazareth underwent Jewish and Roman trials, was flogged, and was sentenced to death by crucifixion. The scourging produced deep stripelike lacerations and appreciable blood loss, and it probably set the stage for hypovolemic shock as evidenced by the fact that Jesus was too weakened to carry the crossbar (patibulum) to Golgotha. At the site of crucifixion his wrists were nailed to the patibulum, and after the patibulum was lifted onto the upright post, (stipes) his feet were nailed to the stipes. The major pathophysiologic effect of crucifixion was an interference with normal respirations. Accordingly, death resulted primarily from hypovolemic shock and exhaustion asphyxia. Jesus death was ensured by the thrust of a soldiers spear into his side. Modern medical interpretation of the historical evidence indicates that Jesus was dead when taken down from the cross. He was DEAD dead. And defeated death on the 3rd day. Praise Be To God!
Thank you Lord for paying the price for me.
There is no extent or degree of thankfulness that could be considered excessive for this massive outpouring of the love of God for mankind! We are forever indebted for the gift of cleansing and forgiveness which was purchased for us on that day.
Nor is there any extent or degree of my incredulity at the wholesale rejection, by prideful, disbelieving, gainsaying humanity, of this one-of-a-kind gift, the Gospel. How people can be confronted with the realities of the death and resurrection of Christ, only to walk away and say, “I’ve got my own ideas about how to obtain eternal life”, I’ll never know.
All we like sheep have gone astray.
We have turned every one to his own way.
And the Lord has laid on HIM the iniquity of us all.
Praise God for the Good News!
Agreed. Amazing read.
Im an MD. I remember this article very well.
However you might like to look at the journals that followed and read the scathing letters that JAMA recd mainly from Jewish doctors because they published this historical accounting.
Most experts say the Shroud shows nail marks in Jesuss wrists. And thats just the way the Romans did it. But most medieval depictions of the crucifixion incorrectly show the nails in Jesus’s palms.
This seems to me to be an argument in favor of the Shroud being authentic.
Lewis Nailed it - and still does.... timely post.
