Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalms

Psalm 146

1 Praise the Lord.[a]

Praise the Lord, my soul.

2 I will praise the Lord all my life;
    I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
3 Do not put your trust in princes,
    in human beings, who cannot save.
4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
    on that very day their plans come to nothing.
5 Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
    whose hope is in the Lord their God.

6 He is the Maker of heaven and earth,
    the sea, and everything in them—
    he remains faithful forever.
7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed
    and gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets prisoners free,
8     the Lord gives sight to the blind,
the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down,
    the Lord loves the righteous.
9 The Lord watches over the foreigner
    and sustains the fatherless and the widow,
    but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

10 The Lord reigns forever,
    your God, O Zion, for all generations.

Praise the Lord.

Our Father in Heaven,
How Hallowed,
Magnificent,
and Sanctified
is Your Most Holy Name!
How Blessed and How True is Your Word,
and How Mighty!
How Glorious,
to Span the Millennia,
To be Unfettered by Time and Space,
To Know The End from the Beginning
and the beginning from The End!
For it is You, Oh LORD,
Who designed the Galaxies with Your Compass,
And Mapped Out the Vast Reaches of Space
With Your Word and Your Omniscient Imagination!
Scientists tell us even the heavens are finite.
But YOU are Infinite!
LORD, remind us ALWAYS to Worship You,
and not Your Creation.
Your creation is there but to proclaim YOUR GLORY.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH For Our Brethren Of All Faiths Throughout The World Suffering Persecution.

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The last five Psalms in the Psalter are "Hallelujah" Psalms. These are not the only songs or Psalms in the Bible, as we have discovered in our lengthy study of Music in the Scriptures. There are Psalms in the chapters that describe David's reign, and the narrative is often interrupted with a beautiful song.

Psalm 146 frames the prayer with "Hallelujah's". We have seen this before in the "Hallel" sung at Passover. The line:

"Praise the Lord, my soul" closely parallels Psalm 103 and 104.

Although Commentators think these last "Hallelujah Psalms" are post-exilic, they bear a strong resemblance in spirit to the earlier Psalms attributed to David, Solomon, Asaph, and Moses. That's because, although these Songwriters are centuries apart in some cases, the "Inspiration" is from the same Source.

For our friends who observe the Western Liturgical Calendar, today is Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. Many of us would have loved to be in Church this morning, but because of the worldwide quarantine, cannot be there. Perhaps we can achieve a little sense of community on this thread today, and I wish you all a very Blessed and Holy Time with your families. Please, everybody, stay safe, and be blessed in the knowledge that God is Sovereign over everything, and We WILL get through this.
