Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) defended deeming churches as essential in his stay-at-home order, telling reporters during Thursdays press conference that the government does not have the authority to close a church and adding that they play an important role, particularly in times like this.
DeSantis formally issued a stay-at-home order on Wednesday after days of mounting pressure. The order is designed to limit their [Floridians] movements and personal interactions outside of their home to only those necessary to obtain or provide essential services or conduct essential activities. Essential activities include picking up groceries, going to doctor appointments, and, notably, attending religious services conducted in churches, synagogues and houses of worship.
DeSantis defended his decision to consider religious services as essential during Thursdays press conference and stated that he spoke with churches and synagogues very early on and asked that they hold their services in a way that is going to be conducive to this overall mission.
He said:
One, I dont think the government has the authority to close a church. Im certainly not going to do that. At the same time, we got with the churches and synagogues very early and said in times like this, what you guys are doing, I think, is even more important. But we ask that you do it in a way that is going to be conducive to this overall mission. And I would say almost all of them 100 percent agree. Some have gone virtual. Some have had people, but theyve been spread out far enough.

Everyone knows that congresscritters are not essential.
State congresscritters are not essential.
And 99.999999999999% of the media is not essential.
I don’t disagree with his reasoning, but in the end it will either turn out to be the right call, or the wrong call.
“Deeming” is extra-constitutional totalitarianism.
Pandemic plus a large group of people sitting shoulder to shoulder. What could go wrong?
Hooray for DeSantis and God bless him.
The governor is absolutely correct. Governors who are closing churches have crossed a constitutional barrier. I assume some lawsuits after this is over.
No church in their right mind remains open right now but is should be voluntary with heavy coercion not mandatory.
The constitution does not have exception for pandemic.
Even in her in NY, Cuomo and De Blasio have said nothing about Mosques needing to be closed.
No one in our Constitutional Republic has the Right to curtail our God Given Rights as Enumerated in The Bill of Rights. No One!
That said, we are all, as individuals, empowered with individual freedom of thought and the freedom to choose our course of action given any certain circumstance weighed against our circumstances.
In our family’s case, we have chosen to adhere to the maximum social distancing we are able to.
We are caring for my Great Aunt who is 82, has Alzheimer’s and other issues. If she is exposed it’s a death sentence.
But, our circumstance is not equal to others. The numbers models forecast to date, so far, are an extreme over calculation when weighed against current actuals.
It appears we have seriously overreacted based on worst case apocalyptic model projections.
Remember, these same exact sort of “experts” using Computer Models have been forecasting Climate Doom for the Planet for Decades. Not one Climate Model forecast has come even remotely close. Same thing with this virus so far.
We very well may have been played. Big Time. And, if so, a very great many people will suffer irreparable harm because of it.
Businesses Destroyed. Jobs Lost. Worldwide Economic Harm.
All these are possible and all because of Computer Model Projections by Bureaucrats predicting Apocalyptic Doom.
Just Like Global Warming Models for decades that never came even remotely close to reality.
Just common sense.
This is the first time in the history of our country where power mad politicians have ordered the closure of churches.
Costco is essential. Our law office has been deemed essential. But my church is considered non- essential.
Thank God for governors like DeSantis. He understands that worshipping God in a time like this is vital both to the citizens and the country.
Have a look at this graph. I will pray for you and your Great Aunt. I am also caring for someone whom I love very much, my mom. If I bring it to her...
Congregating in close spaces with a single air supply is only for the stupid.
And any church which takes this to heart in criminal in most states.
And will validate Darwin.
No, I’m not going to argue with those who have a different opinion.
I didnt say churches should not close, but they should never ever be interfered with by government force. Blatantly unconstitutional
His actions are consistent with the state constitution and Feds too.
“No church in their right mind remains open right now but is should be voluntary with heavy coercion not mandatory.”
Reasonable compromise.
But what do you do about the stupid who endanger others?
“The constitution does not have exception for pandemic.”
Sure it does.
And only those not educated believe otherwise.
Please point to where it is in the text
“No one in our Constitutional Republic has the Right to curtail our God Given Rights as Enumerated in The Bill of Rights. No One!”
Bullshit.
Every POTUS and every Governor under declared emergency can do nearly whatever they please.
And NOBODY ON THIS EARTH can stop them.
