Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

Psalms

Psalm 145[a]

A psalm of praise. Of David.

1 I will exalt you, my God the King;
    I will praise your name for ever and ever.
2 Every day I will praise you
    and extol your name for ever and ever.

3 Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
    his greatness no one can fathom.
4 One generation commends your works to another;
    they tell of your mighty acts.
5 They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—
    and I will meditate on your wonderful works.[b]
6 They tell of the power of your awesome works—
    and I will proclaim your great deeds.
7 They celebrate your abundant goodness
    and joyfully sing of your righteousness.
8 The Lord is gracious and compassionate,
    slow to anger and rich in love.

9 The Lord is good to all;
    he has compassion on all he has made.
10 All your works praise you, Lord;
    your faithful people extol you.
11 They tell of the glory of your kingdom
    and speak of your might,
12 so that all people may know of your mighty acts
    and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
    and your dominion endures through all generations.

The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises
    and faithful in all he does.[c]
14 The Lord upholds all who fall
    and lifts up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to you,
    and you give them their food at the proper time.
16 You open your hand
    and satisfy the desires of every living thing.

17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways
    and faithful in all he does.
18 The Lord is near to all who call on him,
    to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfills the desires of those who fear him;
    he hears their cry and saves them.
20 The Lord watches over all who love him,
    but all the wicked he will destroy.

21 My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord.
    Let every creature praise his holy name
    for ever and ever.

The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 145 has some very interesting features that are apparent in the Hebrew. The first is in the sub title "A Psalm of Praise". The Hebrew word for that is "tehillah", and is unique in Psalm 145. The plural however, "Tehillim", has come to mean the Entire Book of Psalms in Hebrew. What we call The Psalter" is "Tehillim" to a Jewish Person.

The other Hebrew Phrase that has become the basis for many Hebrew Hymns and Songs is "L' do Vodor". This phrase means "From Generation to Generation", and is the fulfillment of Deuteronomy 6, the command to teach one's children to Love The Lord.

Psalm 145 is framed by an Intro and a Coda that Praise the Lord, and then has 4 Stanzas in between. Each Stanza explores a different attribute of the One True God:

1. God's Greatness, Splendor, and Majesty. We are called to proclaim His Glory from Generation to Generation.

2. God's Grace and Compassion. Absolute Power without Grace and Mercy is a terrifying thought!

3. God's Faithfulness. Even when we are unfaithful, He is faithful, through all Generations.

4. God's Righteousness. This is a stumbling block for many, as One so Totally Righteous and Just would not have any room for our foolish, sinful ways. And yet, this Quality of God is quickly followed by His Grace, Mercy, and Forgiveness.

On top of everything else, this Psalm is an Acrostic, meaning that each successive line is begun by the next letter of the Hebrew Alphabet. It is truly a Wonderful "Tehillah"!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.” " (Hosea 6:3, NIV)
