Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

Psalms

Psalm 139

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

1 You have searched me, Lord,
    and you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
    you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
    you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely.
5 You hem me in behind and before,
    and you lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
    too lofty for me to attain.

7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
    Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
    if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
    if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
    your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
    and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
    the night will shine like the day,
    for darkness is as light to you.

13 For you created my inmost being;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
    when I was made in the secret place,
    when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
    all the days ordained for me were written in your book
    before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God!
    How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
    they would outnumber the grains of sand—
    when I awake, I am still with you.

19 If only you, God, would slay the wicked!
    Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty!
20 They speak of you with evil intent;
    your adversaries misuse your name.
21 Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord,
    and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?
22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
    I count them my enemies.
23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
    test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
    and lead me in the way everlasting.

According To Your Will and Promise.
We Beseech You on Behalf of Our Captive Brethren,

In Bondage in Hostile lands.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 139 is one of my all-time favorite Psalms. It is made up of four Stanzas of six lines apiece, and expounds upon the the Attributes of God that are beyond our understanding:

1. His Omnipotence: God is All Mighty, All Powerful, and there is nothing He can not do. This is a Mystery, because Scripture says He "cannot lie". So it is beyond our understanding. I suppose one could posit that God COULD lie if he wanted to, but is so GOOD that He would never want to, and so He can't. "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me", so I don't trouble myself over it!

2. His Omniscience: The word "Omniscience" means "all-knowing". There isn't a single thing God doesn't know. Your entire DNA sequence (and mine too...and every other creature that has ever lived or will live on our planet...or all the other planets), the amount of matter and light being sucked into a black hole (and where it will end up once it's in there), and who is going to love Him and who will not. I will not be dragged into an argument regarding "predestination" however, because such knowledge is too wonderful for me, and "too lofty for me to attain." Suffice it to say that there is nowhere you can hide from God. This Omniscience and the intimate Knowledge of each individual from times eternal is the strongest Pro-Life argument in all of Scripture.

3. His Omnipresence: God is everywhere. This is not to be confused with some ideas of polytheism that ascribes godhood to everything in nature, like in Disney's Pocahontas movie. God is everywhere, but everything is not "god". There is no where I can hide from Him, either vertically (from the heavens to the depths of the sea)or horizontally (from the dawn to the far side of the sea). I can't even hide from Him in my own thoughts, for He is there as well.

4. His Sovereignty: God is in control, no matter how bleak things may look. This is not the fatalism of Islam, or the fear and helplessness of superstition, because lastly, but certainly not only:

5. God is Good: He is completely and totally Good, and therefore can't tolerate evil. And that's another paradox!

In a Systematic Theology Course that I took, in the very first lesson, the Professor drew a huge arch on the blackboard. He said that God's attributes would exist above and under the arch. Above the Arch were attributes that God had, and nobody else could share. Beneath the arch were other attributes that, as Believers, we are able to receive. Above the arch were the five Attributes I listed in Today's Study of Psalm 139. No matter how "good" we try to be, we will NEVER be Absolutely Good, Absolutely Sovereign, Omnipotent, Omniscient, or Omnipresent. There are cults out there that promise this (usually after you hand over lots of money) but it ain't gonna happen.

Below the arch are attributes that we can receive. They are called the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit. They are such things as Love, Joy, Peace, Faithfulness, Kindness, Gentleness, Meekness, Knowledge, Wisdom, Fear of God, Faith, Hope, Charity, Courage, and so on. "The Arch" made such an impression on me, and I never forgot it. Psalm 139 distills it perfectly.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.” " (Hosea 6:3, NIV)

They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
