What will the post-coronavirus church look like?
Christian Post ^ | 03/26/2020 | Thom S. Rainer

Church leaders and members are rightly giving much attention to dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. In-person church services are being canceled. Small groups are meeting digitally, if at all.

Church leaders are urging members to support the church financially through digital giving. Churches are preparing ways to minister to their communities in the midst of the pandemic.

I am grateful for the responses and for the caring hearts of so many church members. In the midst of a major challenge, it is heartwarming and reassuring to see many people who really care.

But the coronavirus will move past its pandemic state at some point in the future. I am fascinated to see what our churches will look like on “the other side.” Here are eight likely developments:

For certain, these are trying days. I know you know it, but remember God’s got this situation. He’s got you. And He’s got your church. I am in an ongoing conversation with the Church Answers community. Nearly 1,600 of us church leaders are providing regular updates and thoughts there. We would love to see you there.

Small home churches may spring up. I have seen parking lots in my area with circles of backed-up SUVs, hatches open, music on, feet dangling from the trunk area, lawn chairs.

It does invoke more intimate community. Time to count our true friends and keep them in our circle.

We only have about 85 people in our church, but Pastor you-tubed last weeks’ sermon and we had 260 hits - that’s three times as many people as we thought we’d get.

Oh please...if they get a vaccine...and or a medical treatment...covid 19 fear will disappear. Go the way of smallpox...tetanus...diphtheria...herpes...measles..zoster...etc.....then...we will get another viral pandemic....operating mode is “one bad apple spoils the whole bunch”...unlike the Osmonds old song..

What an ideal situation for the thousands of ‘sitting’ drive in theaters. It has been attempted in the past. Church Services at an under-used drive in theater. IIRC this was in California. Better a Church than a used car sales lot!

Dunbar’s rule. People prefer smaller, more intimate gatherings where they feel connected, especially on a weekly basis.

All I care about is having them stop the abominable hand shaking periods. Everything can go back to how it was before — but stop the “howdys and handshakes”.

The true church, the body of believers in Christ, and only Christ, will continue.

We're about to find out who is serious about their faith in Christ.

The serious will be stopping silly differnces.

Yes, and some of the following is coming too. Not that I am looking forward to it. It will find me.

2 Timothy 3:12 - Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

John 15:18 - If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before [it hated] you.

Matthew 5:44 - But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

1 Peter 4:12-14 - Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: (Read More...)

1 Peter 3:17 - For [it is] better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

Silly differences yes....serious differences, no. Those must always be contended for.

Trouble is that some of the perceived serious differences really are silly difference. “In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.” ― St. Augustine And the unity is not because people decided to have unity, but because they listened to and obeyed the Holy Spirit. This is how true unity comes to be.

Well, the issue of the Mass vs the Lord's Supper and the meaning/conduct of those is a pretty big difference between Roman Catholicism and NT Christianity.

The Apocrypha is another.

Those are not lightweight disagreements.

An example of that would be chairs or pews....though some have gone to battle over that! Little do many realize in the early church people would sometimes get up and walk around during the sermon and discuss it or even comment on it.

Could you imagine that happening today?!

Yes.

One or both of the RC and NTC will have to make major changes to exist as the true Church.

And I see the time approaching when these major changes will be imperative.

Notice that I am not telling anyone what these changes are or how to do them. I’ve got some ideas, but I expect the Holy Spirit will tell me what I need to change.
