Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalms

Psalm 135

1 Praise the Lord.[a]

Praise the name of the Lord;
    praise him, you servants of the Lord,
2 you who minister in the house of the Lord,
    in the courts of the house of our God.

3 Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good;
    sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant.
4 For the Lord has chosen Jacob to be his own,
    Israel to be his treasured possession.

5 I know that the Lord is great,
    that our Lord is greater than all gods.
6 The Lord does whatever pleases him,
    in the heavens and on the earth,
    in the seas and all their depths.
7 He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth;
    he sends lightning with the rain
    and brings out the wind from his storehouses.

8 He struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
    the firstborn of people and animals.
9 He sent his signs and wonders into your midst, Egypt,
    against Pharaoh and all his servants.
10 He struck down many nations
    and killed mighty kings—
11 Sihon king of the Amorites,
    Og king of Bashan,
    and all the kings of Canaan—
12 and he gave their land as an inheritance,
    an inheritance to his people Israel.

13 Your name, Lord, endures forever,
    your renown, Lord, through all generations.
14 For the Lord will vindicate his people
    and have compassion on his servants.

15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
    made by human hands.
16 They have mouths, but cannot speak,
    eyes, but cannot see.
17 They have ears, but cannot hear,
    nor is there breath in their mouths.
18 Those who make them will be like them,
    and so will all who trust in them.

19 All you Israelites, praise the Lord;
    house of Aaron, praise the Lord;
20 house of Levi, praise the Lord;
    you who fear him, praise the Lord.
21 Praise be to the Lord from Zion,
    to him who dwells in Jerusalem.

And Your Have Given Us Your Breath of Life By Your Sovereign Will.
Nothing is Impossible For You,

For Your Are The Beginning and The End,

How Pleasant it is to Stand in Your House and Worship You,

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

"Daddy, what is electricity?"

I was a rather precocious six-year-old, and wanted to know everything all at once. Daddy gabbed a sheet of paper and drew a circle, with a gap in it, like a belt buckle. He then proceeded to draw little dots going around the circle. When they got to the buckle, it mattered if the buckle was open or closed. If the circuit was broken, the electricity stopped. Daddy also used this method to explain AC/DC Current, Short Circuits, Plumbing and Heating, Phonograph Records, Stereo, the Atomic Bomb, Nuclear Energy, the Solar System, and The Holy Trinity. He had such a gift for teaching that I remember everything he taught me.

I will never forget my Daddy's explanation of The Ten Commandments. The First Commandment, about not worshiping other gods, seemed like an easy one until Daddy explained what it REALLY meant. It wasn't just about crazy old heathens bowing down before a golden statue like in the Tarzan movies. Daddy said something like this:

"Anything can be an idol. Your home, money, your family, your job, your career, Movie Stars, even that guy they've been showing on Ed Sullivan lately...you know, Elvis Presley. He can even be an idol for some people."

I shuddered at that. I kind of liked Elvis Presley, but I sure didn't want to break the First Commandment! Maybe I should stick to the Boston Pops. But I was scared I might idolize THEM too! Daddy was right. It is very easy to break the First Commandment, and you don't even need a golden idol to do it.

As I write this, we are halfway through a fifteen-day quarantine for the Coronavirus. All the schools, restaurants, bars, sports venues, theaters, cafes, concerts, gathering places, and even churches have been closed. The Giant Sporting events that draw millions of people have been shut down, and the Olympics may be cancelled or postponed. Millions are out of work, and of course, the economy is reflecting that. All of the things that Daddy said could be made into idols have been put on hold. While it would be presumptuous of me to explain WHY God is allowing this to happen, I put all my faith in Him, that He will provide and that, in the end, it will all be to His Glory. I can't explain it. I just BELIEVE it.

If Daddy were here, he probably would have been able to draw a picture to explain it.

Reminds me of an Elvis Presley anecdote. Elvis loved his fans, of course, and they loved him back... but sometimes the extent to which he was “idolized” by them unnerved him.

At some concert, I believe, a bunch of people called out to Elvis, “You’re the KING !” To which a deeply troubled Elvis rebuked the crowd, “NO ! Jesus Christ is the King !” Of course, I’m sure most of the crowd meant it as “King of Rock n’Roll” and no disrespect to the Almighty, even at the top of his game, Elvis didn’t want even his most ardent fans to think of him as equal to or greater than the Son of God.
