Psalm 130

A song of ascents.

1 Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;
2     Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
    to my cry for mercy.

3 If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,
    Lord, who could stand?
4 But with you there is forgiveness,
    so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

5 I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,

How Blessed and Glorious is Your Holy Name!

Heaven and Earth Sing of Your Glory!

There is No Place Too Deep Or Dark, Lord,

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Some 2000 years ago, a religious community called The Essenes could see that their days were numbered. The Roman Legions had taken over Judea, destroying the Temple, and massacring the Jewish inhabitants. In their terror, they gathered up all their religious books, including many scrolls of what we now call "The Old Testament", sealed them in clay jars, and hid them in a series of caves overlooking the Dead Sea. When these were discovered in 1946-1953, it amazed the world. They are now housed in The Shrine of the Book in Jerusalem. I have visited both Qumran (where the caves are) and The Shrine of the Book, and I can't tell you how awestruck I was seeing these things. But, if History had gone a different way, we might never have discovered these priceless artifacts.

Though not even close in importance, I have another "lost and found" story to share which involves this very Thread.

Some of you who have been with this Thread all ten years know that, at the very beginning, I made all of my own Graphics. They were stored on a graphics-sharing website, and were free to all. Then the site became unusable with all the advertising (I suppose that is what one gets for "free") so I stopped using it. Then, about six months ago, I got a notice that the site was shutting down permanently, and all my images would be lost if I didn't save them. So I saved what I could, mostly from the albums that were personal pictures. And so, the designs I made for Psalms, Proverbs, and the Hebrew Alphabet were gone forever.

Every once in a while, I find one of my graphics, with a different URL, on another website. By "stealing" the graphic from Free Republic, and assigning it a new address, the user actually PRESERVED my artwork! I have no way of finding these images unless the other user assigned a Key Word that I too would use when searching the Internet for images for this daily Thread. Since the name of the Psalm is a likely keyword, my old, lost images pop up from time to time. But I have to wait very patiently for them to show up.

Today's Psalm 130 is the sixth of the "Penitential" Psalms. It is also the Tenth Song of Ascents, assigned to David. It's Theme is Patiently waiting on the Lord, like a Watchman in the Night. It is made up of two Stanzas of four couplets each. The Stanzas are further divided into 2 couplets. It suggests Balance, Calm, Trust, and true repentance in waiting on the Lord. It is an apt lesson in these times of Quarantine.

They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
