Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The 21st Hebrew letter is “Shin” and its numerical value is 300. It represents “fire” and “teeth.” Now, think of this. Fire is constantly moving. Teeth (hopefully!) are NOT supposed to move around. Here we have the opposites of restless movement vs. serene stillness.

It also appears in the Hebrew word for sleep “shennah” (non-movement) and represents a feeling serenity and calmness. It is the root for year “Shanah” which means constant cycle and change (movement); Malachi 6:3 – God is God and is un-moveable and NEVER ever changes …and is the immovable force that moves everything.

Today's letter, "Shin", is a Familiar looking Hebrew Letter.

It is the Sound of "Sh" in English, and the Original Pictograph represented TEETH.

Teeth Mean Power, Strength, to Consume, Devour , or Destroy It Also Stands For Protection and Authority...and, Immovability.

The First Word in the Stanza is "Sar", (Prince) as in "Princes persecute me. Princes are people of Power and Authority, and should know better than to persecute the innocent.

Leonard Nimoy has told the story of how, as a child, he “peeked” at the Rabbi during a particularly solemn moment during the High Holiday Services at Temple Mishkin T’Fillah in Roxbury MA (my old neighborhood). He saw the Cohen making the gesture with both hands and remembered it. Making the gesture in the taping of a Star Trek (TOS) episode was spontaneous, but it became part of the Star Trek Canon.

Temple Mishken T’Fillah eventually moved to Newton, MA, and the building was sold to Alma Lewis, who turned it into a school for Afro-American Art and Music. The School produced a musical called “Black Nativity” which used Blues, Jazz, and Gospel Music and became a staple of Boston’s Christmas Season for many years. (I got to use a short clip in one of my music videos that I made with Hugo Paretti and Luigi Creatore, composers of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” made famous by Elvis)

The last time I went by there, the building was abandoned, with trees over growing it’s beautiful Neo-Classical facade.

However, the overgrowth could not hide a huge carving on the pediment of the building:

“NOT BY POWER, NOT BY MIGHT, BUT BY MY SPIRIT SAITH THE LORD”

Kind of interesting. Alma, Hugo, Louis, Elvis, and Leonard are all gone now, but those words remain.
