29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. There's no doubt that that has happened in he past, in numerous, painful times of trial and testing, and is happening right now: I am convinced of that.

It's Satan who wants to scatter the flock. And when the wolves come, Jesus says, the hireling runs away because he's just a hired hand: he doesn't care abut the sheep because he's just in it for the money. The true shepherd does not run and let the sheep scatter. He stays and fights. That's why the Church on Earth is called the Church Militant. We're not supposed to split or scatter. We're supposed to stand our ground. We are all part of this fight.
