New Poll Asks Catholics What They Believe About Abortion
The National Catholic Register ^ | 2/24/20 | Matt Hadro

The poll of 1,512 Catholic registered voters was conducted between Jan. 28 - Feb. 4, 2020, and surveyed U.S. Catholic opinion on a range of subjects, including political affiliation, preferred presidential candidate, the morality of abortion, and religious practices.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — While the Catholic Church teaches that procuring an abortion is always immoral, a majority of U.S. Catholics do not believe abortion is intrinsically evil and say it should be legal in all or most cases.

According to a RealClear Opinion Research poll sponsored by EWTN and published on Monday, 47% of Catholics in the U.S. believe abortion is “intrinsically evil,” while a 53% hold otherwise.

A majority — 51% — say that abortion should be legal in all or most cases, with 31% saying it should be legal except for late-term cases and 20% saying it should always be legal.

The poll of 1,512 Catholic registered voters was conducted between Jan. 28 - Feb. 4, 2020, and surveyed U.S. Catholic opinion on a range of subjects, including political affiliation, preferred presidential candidate, the morality of abortion, and religious practices.

U.S. Catholics were slightly less likely to support legal abortion than Americans overall. According to 2019 Gallup polling, 25% of Americans think abortion should be “legal under any circumstances,” while 20% of Catholics take that position, according to Monday’s poll.

But while 21% of Americans believe abortion should be “illegal in all” circumstances according to the Gallup poll, only 11% of Catholics think so.

Michael New, a visiting professor of social research and political science at the Catholic University of America, told CNA that religious practice, not self-identification, is the strongest predictor of opinions on abortion.

“What is a much stronger predictor” for Catholics, he said, is “attendance at Mass.”

Among Catholics attending Mass at least weekly, the majority......

Is this believable or does this seem like a poll with a purpose?
The extra fillip of legal under almost all circumstances makes it “too good for the Left” to be true.

I thought The Church was supposed to tell them what to think about this issue.

It’s a push poll, and hopes to become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I’m Catholic, and have to say most of these people make me sick!
Evangelical is quite appealing at the moment!
Let me see, my faith has a Marxist Pope, and the rank and file seem to not have a big problem with killing an innocent- WOW!

Maybe it is they who have left the Church, and those who try to remain faithful who are the remnant.

36% of Democratic Catholics said that abortion is intrinsically evil, compared to 63% of Republican Catholics who said it is

Its been a long time since I've heard a sermon on the evils of abortion, although there are frequent prayer intentions for ending abortion.

If you consider yourself faithful to the authentic Catholic teaching, which is that abortion is intrinsically evil, BUT you think most Catholics are unfaithful, then I don't see how you are "instructing the ignorant," "admonishing sinners" ---practicing the Spiritual Works of Mercy --- or in any other way improving the Church, by leaving it.

Remember the Spiritual Works of Mercy?

Remember the "Church Militant"?

Familiar with the concept of "Spiritual Warfare"?

You seem to be in a posture of preemptive surrender.

Well, baptized as one is a real basic start.

After all, the FRomans keep telling us that *Once a Catholic, always a Catholic* and baptism leaves an indelible mark on ones soul.

So there you have it. 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide, whether they practice or not and whether they want it or not.

Is this believable or does this seem like a poll with a purpose?

Based on my one on one conversations with very active, practicing, church attending and supporting Catholics, this is no surprise.

Every last one of them that I worked with or was related to or lived near, vote democrat/liberal.

When asked why they do in light the church teaching, it's because *the democrats are for the poor*.

Yup that was the answer right to my face.

I also recently heard form my 90 year old Catholic neighbor that gay wedding were fine with her and as far as abortion, it was *I know what the church teaches but the church doesn't have the right to tell a woman what to do with her own body*, said this mother of 6 children.

I can literally count on one hand the number of Catholics I have met in real life who are conservative and will not vote dem.

That is very sad.
My Italian catholic family would not be at home in your parish. They are weaning themselves from the Dems but would never support abortion past the very earliest weeks. My 101 year old aunt is a string Trump supporter.

The Church can talk all day long about the subject ... it’s up to the people to listen and act.

Move to a better neighborhood, you would be very hard pressed to find anyone in my parish who supports the Dems.
