Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
One of the most "politically incorrect" but endearing ad campaigns of the early 1960's was for a Brooklyn bakery named "Levy's". The ad showed people of different ethnicities, somewhat exaggerated, enjoying with great relish a big hunk of Jewish Rye Bread. The slogan was:
"You Don't Have To Be Jewish To Love Levy's Real Jewish Rye."
It was a very popular campaign, but would probably not be allowed in today's hyper-sensitive world. But it it did give us a perspective on something that is an eternal truth. The Redemptive History that is related in the Hebrew Scriptures is for all of us, all over the world.
Not only is Psalm 117 the shortest Psalm in the Psalter, it is also the shortest Chapter in the whole Bible. In addition to that, it is the final candle in our "Virtual Menorah". It is so short that the entire thing can fit onto a graphic without crowding, and might be passed over quickly in reading. But that would be a mistake. The significance of this little Psalm is Earth shattering.
While most of the Hebrew Scriptures concern God's relationship with His Chosen People, the Psalm brings the rest of humanity into His Covenant of Love. Elegant in its brevity and filled with Promise, this Psalm is for all of us.
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
