Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
(Music in The Bible)
Psalm 116
Psalm 116
1 I love the Lord, for he heard my voice;
he heard my cry for mercy.
2 Because he turned his ear to me,
I will call on him as long as I live.
3 The cords of death entangled me,
the anguish of the grave came over me;
I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
4 Then I called on the name of the Lord:
Lord, save me!
5 The Lord is gracious and righteous;
our God is full of compassion.
6 The Lord protects the unwary;
when I was brought low, he saved me.
7 Return to your rest, my soul,
for the Lord has been good to you.
8 For you, Lord, have delivered me from death,
my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling,
9 that I may walk before the Lord
in the land of the living.
10 I trusted in the Lord when I said,
I am greatly afflicted;
11 in my alarm I said,
Everyone is a liar.
12 What shall I return to the Lord
for all his goodness to me?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the Lord.
14 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
15 Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his faithful servants.
16 Truly I am your servant, Lord;
I serve you just as my mother did;
you have freed me from my chains.
17 I will sacrifice a thank offering to you
and call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts of the house of the Lord
in your midst, Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord.[a]

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
A sports cliche that has come down through the years is one that emphasizes unity over individual aggrandizement:
"There is no "I" in "TEAM".
That may be true grammatically, but then the very coach who uttered these words lionizes the awesome Quarterback, or arranges the batting order to get as many hits as possible. So, yes, there may not be an "I" in "TEAM", but every one on the team is a separate person, with different talents.
In the worshiping Body of Believers, we all have roles to play. Some are more prominent than others, and some are less glamorous. And yet, we are all Individuals, each with our own relationship to The Almighty. This is only possible because of God's Omniscience and Sovereignty. He knows each and every one of us individually. This is in sharp contrast to "collectivism" which submerges the individual into a hive mentality. What the collectivists don't realize, though, is that there will always be "I's" yearning to break free.
The 6th Candle in our Virtual Menorah is Psalm 116. Although this is a Liturgical Psalm, it is expressed in the First Person Singular. The opening line is a glorious declaration of individuality:
"I love the Lord, for He heard my voice".
This wonderful opening line sets the tone for the rest of the Psalm, which is composed of 3 sections, each with its own theme:
Verses 1-6 Relationship with God
Verses 7-14 God's Great Work of Deliverance in my life
Verses 15-19 A hymn of Praise and Thanksgiving.
While there may not be an "I" in "TEAM", there is, if you look closely, a "ME". We love God because He first loved US. I love Him because He first loved ME. And together, we make a great team.
