Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 110

Psalm 110

Of David. A psalm.

1 The Lord says to my lord:[a]

“Sit at my right hand
    until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”

2 The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion, saying,
    “Rule in the midst of your enemies!”
3 Your troops will be willing
    on your day of battle.
Arrayed in holy splendor,
    your young men will come to you
    like dew from the morning’s womb.[b]

4 The Lord has sworn
    and will not change his mind:
“You are a priest forever,
    in the order of Melchizedek.”

5 The Lord is at your right hand[c];
    he will crush kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead
    and crushing the rulers of the whole earth.
7 He will drink from a brook along the way,[d]
    and so he will lift his head high.

Our Father In Heaven,
Holy and Sanctified is Your Most Wonderful Name!
You Alone Are Worthy;
You Alone Are LORD;
You Alone Are The Most High!
You Alone Are The One True God Of The Universe,
You Are The Ancient Of Days,
LORD of Hosts,
and Rock of All Ages,
Our Creator,

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Oh my...where do I begin with this awesome Psalm? It is the last song in this little series and is an Oracle of the Messiah. It bears a strong resemblance to Psalm 2, and yet, here we are, over one hundred songs later. This shows the cohesiveness and consistence of Scripture. Both Psalm 2 and Today's Psalm can be called "Coronation" Psalms, but refer to Much More than an Earthly King.

Considering this psalm as "Messianic" is not a new interpretation, or "2020 Hindsight". There is ample evidence in the New Testament that First-Century Jewish Scholars considered this Psalm to be Prophetic as well as celebratory. Here are some references to this Psalm in conversation and discussion that show this:

Jesus: Matthew 22:43-45, Mark 12:36-37, Luke 20:42-42-44

Peter: Acts 2:34-36

Paul: 1 Corinthians 15:25, Ephesians 1:22

Author of Hebrews: Hebrews 1:13, 5:6-10, 7:11-28.

I might even venture a wild guess and say that this may be the most quoted PSALM in the New Testament.

The "King" in this Psalm is no ordinary Monarch. He is, in fact a Priest as well, but no ordinary Priest. He is a Priest Forever after the Order of Melchizedek." Melchizedek is a character in the Book of Genesis Chapter 14, whom Abraham met after a victorious battle. Abraham pays the Priest Melchizedek incredible honor, including a tithe of the spoils. This has caused some Bible Scholars to think that Melchizedek was an appearance of the Pre-Incarnate Christ, known in Theology as a Theophany. Otherwise, Abraham's obeisance to Him would seem improper. It is one of the mysteries of Scripture that cause long arguments online, and we won't be solving it on today's Thread.

Today's Psalm is a glorious, victorious finale to the little book of ten. Tomorrow we start another Songbook, the "Hallal".
