A Christian high school student in Kentucky was expelled after school administrators saw a photograph from her 15th birthday party in which she was wearing a rainbow sweater and smiling next to a rainbow birthday cake.
She was happy. She looked beautiful, the teens mom, Kimberly Alford, told NBC affiliate WAVE of Louisville. Of course, as a mom, I took her picture blowing out her candles, and I posted that on my Facebook page.
Alford said that shortly after she posted the photo, she received a letter from the head of Whitefield Academy, where her daughter, Kayla, was a freshman.
The WA Administration has been made aware of a recent picture, posted on social media, which demonstrates a posture of morality and cultural acceptance contrary to that of Whitefield Academys beliefs, the letter, signed Jan. 6 by the head of the school, Bruce Jacobson, said. We made it clear that any further promotion, celebration, or any other actions and attitudes that are counter to Whitefields philosophy would not be tolerated. As a result, we regret to inform you that Kayla is being dismissed from the school immediately.
While rainbows can have many meanings in addition to being a meteorological phenomenon theyve served as a universal symbol of gay pride and acceptance since the late 1970s.
In a statement shared with NBC News on Wednesday, Whitefield Academy said that the rainbow-filled photo was just the last straw following two years of student code violations.

In fact if anything I'd day that sweater is sooo 1980's
Yeah, I’d like the rainbow to symbolize hope again. The LBTGQWhatever community has pretty successfully co-opted it from the Bible.
Mork and Mindy show. Mork worn Rainbow suspenders.
Heteros everywhere should take back the rainbow.
“Two years of student code violations”, sounds like the teen may be a troublemaker.
Odd too..because.. as many know.. the rainbow is God’s covenant to Moses.
As the old Negro Gospel song says:
God gave Noah the Rainbow Sign,
no more water, FIRE next time!
The rainbow belongs to God. Those who lay claim to it as a weapon to celebrate their perversity will be cast into the Fire! God is not mocked.
Then what was God’s covenant to Noah?
“Two years of student code violations, sounds like the teen may be a troublemaker.”
That’s the way it sounds to me, too.
Ive suggested to my wife that her and my youngest daughter (late toddler stage) having rainbow stamps, T-shirts with other messages + a rainbow etc could be creating the wrong idea, esp in the specific area we live in
Her extremely harsh reply was we are taking about ownership of the symbol of Gods Promise and we and our friends are not caving in....knowing her as well as I do and what a dominant and convincing force she can be Ive quit arguing on that one
years ago as a teen I had a bedroom painted like the sweater and sheets to match. I think this school made a bad choice.
and the “violation” wasn’t even on school property or related to school, it was her birthday party off campus.
Not getting the whole story here
Two years of this kid pushing the moral code rules?
Why would she not be happier in a nice typical liberal school
Bye felicia
She pushed the rules for 2 years
What part of private school is not relevant here?
oops..Noah
The rainbow was God’s gift; then other’s grabbed it for their own selfish reasons. To me it looks like the girl was honoring God’s message.
The pic was posted on social media on her Fakebook page and that is where it was seen by the school administrator according to another published article on this story. This version isn't written nearly as well as the other one I read a couple days ago elsewhere.
I suspected that there was more to this story than the headline.
“the last straw following two years of student code violations”
She was deliberately provoking a response. It wasn’t JUST about the sweater and cake.
Like the first female admitted to the Citadel, who promptly flunked out spectacularly.
“the last straw following two years of student code violations”
This was purposeful.
