With the fourth century doctor of the Church, St. Augustine, they affirm: I cannot keep silent! I know how pernicious silence would be for me. For I do not wish to wallow in ecclesiastical honors, but I think that it is to Christ, the first of the Pastors, that I will have to give an account of the sheep entrusted to my care. I cannot keep silent or claim ignorance.

It certainly wasn’t always the case that priests couldn’t get married and the decision to stop that was based more on holding onto land that might end up in the hands of divorced wives.

The meeting, which took place in October at the Vatican, proposed creating an exception to celibacy in the Latin priesthood.
There already are exceptions for priests from other faiths who convert to Catholicism; they are allowed to stay married if they already are, albeit with certain restrictions.
