Three hermits living in Orkney have been thrown out of the Roman Catholic church, after they called the Pope a "heretic", and said evil was "destroying" the church.
The group published the comments in an online declaration.
A spokesman for the diocese of Argyll and the Isles said they were warned it would lead to excommunication.
He said offers of dialogue had been refused, so "the penalty now applies".
The group - two men who call themselves a priest and a monk, and a lay woman who was a senior doctor - live on the island of Westray.
They run a controversial blog in which they outline their objections to the church's stance on issues including homosexuality.
In 2015 the trio were thrown out of a church house in Northamptonshire for bringing the diocese into disrepute.
And at the beginning of last year one of the group was convicted of sending homophobic abuse to an Episcopal clergyman.
One of the group, Stephen De Kerdrel, told BBC Radio Orkney they believed the church was facing desperate times, and that called for desperate measures.
"Most Christian churches, with the exception of the Orthodox churches, are now so over-run by liberalism and secularism and humanism that they've ceased really being churches," he said.
"But I actually think we're seeing a great battle between Western society and Christianity. And the one they really want to take a pot shot at is the Catholic church.
"So, it almost seems that we're joining the enemy. But we're actually trying to save it from itself."

Where is Archbishop Gilday now that we need him
So much for Free Speech in the Catholic Church.
I know there is no provision for that verbatim, but the assumption is most Christian religions are able to tolerate differing points of view. I guess not so much.
Hmmm...heretics in power now are excommunicating the faithful. Now that Francis has now appointed over 50% of the Cardinals who will select the next Pope, the RCC my be permanently under their rule
So, the Church can’t refute them so it just labels them heretics and bans them from the temple. Isn’t that exactly what the Pharisee’s did?
My brother is a retired bishop in the Church.
He’s been probably more vocal than is wise, to the point where he, too, has been threatened for some of the things he’s said about the pope. (The word “anti-” was floated more than once.)
And, as a retiree who has no significant assets outside of what is effectively a pension at the will of the Church, they’re not shy about threats against old priests.
I’ve got a nice ranch with a great guest house. I’m trying to get him to go nuclear.
Heretic? That’s putting it kindly.
And so, it begins. The first victims of the new LGBTQ Church.
So, being for homosexuality and for baby murder is not cause for excommunication. But disagreeing with changes the Church is foisting on people, changes that contradict God’s word is grounds for excommunication! The Catholic Church leadership is now firmly in Satan’s grasp. It’s horrible.
Revelation 18:4
Then I heard another voice from heaven saying, Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues; ..............
Trivia: the Orkney Islands gave the legendary home of Thomas the tank engine its name. Creator Rev W. Audrey had seen “The Diocese of Sodor and Mann” while studying for the priesthood, and thought it seemed that Sodor was an island, like Mann. In fact, Sodor refers to South Orkney [Islands].
I think one loses one’s hermit status when one gets online accounts.
They spoke the truth.
no offense, but pleeese, what do you expect, Man doesn’t know or walk Christ way...anywhere on earth,
They've obviously never watched any "Primitive" or "Old Regular" Baptist services on YouTube . . . or read The Sword of the Lord.
The ancient liturgical churches have joined liberal Protestants in attacking and ridiculing Fundamentalist Protestants for decades. Now they deprive them of any mention among those who are holding the line.
Typical. (Not to mention that the Orthodox churches are only behind the Catholic and liberal Protestant churches a little bit; they'll catch up.)
Clearly, and by definition, they intentionally excommunicated themselves.
They can hardly complain when they were granted what they asked for in writing and actually did by their own act.
Which they were, of course, free to do.
Seems hardly worth it.
And in the “I didn’t leave the Church; the Church left me” Department...
He is a heretic...I guess i am too.
The Pope is a “heretic” and evil is “destroying” the church.
