Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

Psalm 57

Psalm 57[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.[b] When he had fled from Saul into the cave.

1 Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me,
    for in you I take refuge.
I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings
    until the disaster has passed.

2 I cry out to God Most High,
    to God, who vindicates me.
3 He sends from heaven and saves me,
    rebuking those who hotly pursue me—[c]
    God sends forth his love and his faithfulness.

4 I am in the midst of lions;
    I am forced to dwell among ravenous beasts—
men whose teeth are spears and arrows,
    whose tongues are sharp swords.

5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
    let your glory be over all the earth.

6 They spread a net for my feet—
    I was bowed down in distress.
They dug a pit in my path—
    but they have fallen into it themselves.

7 My heart, O God, is steadfast,
    my heart is steadfast;
    I will sing and make music.
8 Awake, my soul!
    Awake, harp and lyre!
    I will awaken the dawn.

9 I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
    I will sing of you among the peoples.
10 For great is your love, reaching to the heavens;
    your faithfulness reaches to the skies.

11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
    let your glory be over all the earth.

Footnotes:

1. Psalm 57:1 In Hebrew texts 57:1-11 is numbered 57:2-12.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD, Our God,
How Excellent is Your Most Holy Name!
You Are So Holy,
and Worthy of Praise and Worship,
we are Overwhelmed by Your Glory!
It is You Who Made The Earth
and All it Contains,
from the tiniest of Creatures,
to the Greatest of the Mountains,
Forests and Deserts.
It is You Who Commands the Motion of the Stars,
The Galaxies,
and the Great Singularities of Time and Space,
And it is You Who Creates New Life
in the Secret Place of a Mother's Womb!
Oh, Father, You Are So Wonderful,
So Glorious, So Magnificent,
And Mere Words Don't even Tell The Story of Your Awesome Splendor!

Abba Father, You Are Ultimately Righteous,
and True, Pure, Holy, and Just.
Before Your Exquisite Justice,
no human being can stand.
Yet David, a Sinner, A Warrior,
and a "Man After Your Own Heart",
appeals to Your Loving Kindness,
Which is better Than Life!

For the Sake of Your Anointed,
and For The Sake of Your Name,
We pray for the Peace of Jerusalem,
For Israel,
According to Your Word,
and Your Promise.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 57 is very "musical". It is sung to the tune of "Do Not Destroy", which seems to be a very popular tune for David's Psalms. Perhaps he wrote years earlier, and really liked it, or he knew everybody already knew the tune and could adapt the new words quite easily. This would not be the first time it was done that way, nor would it be the last.

The Psalm is two equal verses of three couplets each, followed each time by an identical refrain or "chorus". It is the A, B, A, B form (Verse/Chorus/Verse/Chorus) typical of the most basic popular song (think of "You Are My Sunshine" to get the idea.)

The incident that sparked this Psalm is related in 1 Samuel 24:1-3. It is a prayer for deliverance from the enemy. It uses Metaphors, Personification, and Contrast, comparing "Danger" to the Night, and "Salvation" to the Dawn. He compares Deliverance to Awakening after a nightmare. David also Personifies his musical instruments (The Harp and Lyre) and tells them to wake up too. The verses contrast with each other, Verse 1 stating the danger and Verse 2 rejoicing in God's Salvation.

It is a wonderful little gem, and just the right length to sing with a congregation.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)
