Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

Psalm 56

Psalm 56[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” Of David. A miktam.[b] When the Philistines had seized him in Gath.

1 Be merciful to me, my God,
    for my enemies are in hot pursuit;
    all day long they press their attack.
2 My adversaries pursue me all day long;
    in their pride many are attacking me.

3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
4     In God, whose word I praise—
in God I trust and am not afraid.
    What can mere mortals do to me?

5 All day long they twist my words;
    all their schemes are for my ruin.
6 They conspire, they lurk,
    they watch my steps,
    hoping to take my life.
7 Because of their wickedness do not[c] let them escape;
    in your anger, God, bring the nations down.

8 Record my misery;
    list my tears on your scroll[d]—
    are they not in your record?
9 Then my enemies will turn back
    when I call for help.
    By this I will know that God is for me.

10 In God, whose word I praise,
    in the Lord, whose word I praise—
11 in God I trust and am not afraid.
    What can man do to me?

12 I am under vows to you, my God;
    I will present my thank offerings to you.
13 For you have delivered me from death
    and my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before God
    in the light of life.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The subtitle of Today's Psalm has prompted me to tell a little story that started a long time ago and came to a conclusion just last Wednesday evening during a guitar lesson.

In August of 1997, the world was shocked to hear of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in a terrible car accident in Paris. Most people agreed that this young woman had been doomed to tragedy from the start, as her marriage to Prince Charles was a sham from day one. Conspiracy theories flew around like confetti and the huge outpouring of grief was unprecedented. One of her dearest friends, the world-famous pianist and songwriter Elton John, was asked to write appropriate music for her funeral. Now, in spite of Sir Elton's proclivities and politics, I have TREMENDOUS respect for him as a songwriter and musician. I was looking forward to hearing this magnificent new song, especially knowing how deeply Diana was loved.

Imagine my shock and horror when "Goodbye England's Rose" was an EXACT copy musically of "Candle in the Wind" which was about my favorite actress and comedienne, Marilyn Monroe! I was incensed! Marilyn deserved her own song, and so did Diana! And then I heard that Elton's writing partner, Bernie Taupin, wrote the Diana lyrics, so Elton didn't do anything new for Diana. I was SO MAD! I have since even gotten myself into flame wars on FR over that song. (Of course THAT never happens here!). I know Tchaikovsky quoted Russian Hymns and Folk Tunes, and Brahms and Liszt quoted Gypsy Tunes, and the ALL borrowed from themselves, but this was different. It just seemed so disrespectful.

Now, flash forward 22 years and last Wednesday night, I was teaching a teenage girl the chords to "As Tears Go By" by, of all people, the Rolling Stones. As we finished mapping out the song, the girl said "I know that tune. We sing the Our Father to that tune in church." NO WAY! I scorned. There's no way the words of the Lord's Prayer could fit to a Rolling Stones song. But we decided to try it out, just in case. And so, there we were, the girl with her sweet little-girl voice singing soprano, me singing contralto, and her mom, who walked in, singing alto. The Lord's Prayer. And it fit. And we three women were actually praying together as we were singing. I felt properly "chastised". It was one of those lovely, elusive, spiritual moments that we all long for in life.

Sometimes we musicians can be a little "haughty" about our music, and a little "judgemental" about others. Sometimes it takes years to learn this lesson.

And so we have Today's Psalm. It is to be sung "to the tune of 'The Dove in the Distant Oak'." There is no indication as to whether David wrote the tune of that song, or whether it was a folk song, or a love song, or whatever. But as we read David's lyrics, we see how incredibly relevant they are to Today's events, as if he wrote it this morning. He just used an existing melody. And I am sure the words fit just fine.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

E merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me. .

2 Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.
3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

5 Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil.

6 They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul.

7 Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God.

8 Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?

9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.

10 In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word.

11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.

13 For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

Interesting about popular songs and their origins.

I remember when Princess Di was killed. (A few days later Mother Theresa passed.)

Interesting about popular songs and their origins.

Actually, in this case, The Stones didn't steal the melody from the Church. The Church stole the melody from the Stones. But, the Stones stole a LOT of things from the Old Black Bluesmen. And the Old Black Bluesmen stole a lot of stuff from Spirituals, so that would be "The Church".

Plenty of stealing going on for everybody! :-)

And, I remember about Mother Theresa passing at that time as well. As far as I know, NOBODY wrote a song for her.
