Theologians Praise Suggestion to Add ‘Ecological Sins’ to Catholic Catechism
Crux ^ | 11/20/19 | Nick Mayrand

DAYTON, Ohio - A possible recognition of “ecological sins” in the Catholic Church’s main teaching document would help “sharpen our consciences in matters of ecological abuse,” according to Dr. Christopher Thompson, a leading moral theologian.

Twice in the past few weeks, Church leaders have used language of “ecological sin” to highlight acts and habits of pollution of the environment - first in the final document from the Amazon Synod and more recently on Friday, when Pope Francis said he was considering adding “ecological sin” to the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Such a move would help to cement Francis’s teaching on the necessity of caring for the environment as a key Catholic teaching.

Thompson, Dean of the Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity and author of The Joyful Mystery: Field Notes Toward a Green Thomism, said the language of ecological sin can bring moral clarity, noting that much will depend on steering clear of “politically charged language.”

“Our knowledge of the fragility and complexity of our environmental surroundings has increased dramatically. It seems only prudent to include, then, this new knowledge into our spiritual discernment about what constitutes a vibrant Catholic life,” he told Crux.

A reservoir of moral clarity

Dr. Vincent Miller is the Gudorf Chair in Catholic Theology and Culture at the University of Dayton and editor of The Theological and Ecological Vision of Laudato Si’: Everything is Connected, a volume of scholarly essays inspired by Francis’s 2015 ecological encyclical.

Is this how schisms started in the past?

Can I join a REAL Catholic sect?

“Ecological sins”?

Better get the “sins against nature” under control, for starters.

" ... according to Dr. Christopher Thompson, a leading moral theologian. ..."

Appropriate that the Climate Religion which ironically consists primarily of God denying baby killers would appeal to 'moral theologians' when it fits their delusions.

They don't understand that they are a religious cult. Not understanding it, they don't understand that they are Zombie tyrants, no different from every other incarnation of humans in hypnotized groups across mankind's past causing the types of mass suffering that result in sayings like 'never forget.' But even as man chants it, he repeats it.

Hence Mark Steyn's insightful characterization that much of man's history especially as it relates to governments of men can be reduced to a series of cycles of 'farce, followed by farce, followed by tragedy.'

Dr Thompson is a gun grabbing liberal who thinks the second amendment is anti-Christian. I remember talk at the university where he resides, he literally believed that you couldn’t lie about hiding Jews in your attic if Nazi’s were around, and that no one should have the right to own weapons.

Massively liberal out there in Minnesota “Catholic” institutions.

Well-Paul withstood out Peter face to face and James told them all how it was going to be at the Jerusalem council. So-take your pick who you’re following. I follow Christ. The one your following now is a heretic.

re: “Not in Scripture.”

Wow. Just not going to even “go there” are you. No matter the writings, the records, the correspondence back then between follow-on disciples. That’s pretty much a “bury your head in the sand” and go (with fingers in ears “la la la la la I hear nothing” approach.

This is what separates the “Protest”-ants from, well, the one, true church, an ACTUAL succession of Peter down through the ages, something the “Protest”-ants just don’t have any answer for.

For “Protest”-ants the Bible appears to have simply ‘appeared’ out of thin air in the hands of ????? in about the Middle Ages.

Bless me Father, for I have sinned: I drove a SUV to church 3 times

Did you put any money in the collection box, my son?

Yes Father, $500

Go and sin no more

So which Commandment is an “ecological sin” against?

There were exactly 14 Apostles chosen:

The original 12 Chosen by Christ before His death:

Peter
James
John
Andrew
Bartholomew or Nathanael
James, the Lesser or Younger
Judas
Jude or Thaddeus
Matthew or Levi
Philip
Simon the Zealot
Thomas

....

Judas was a traitor and hung himself

Judas was replaced by Matthias, who was chosen by lot.

.....

The Apostle Paul was chosen directly by Christ, after His resurrection.

......

Scripture records no other Apostles, nor commands to choose successors to Apostles, nor a procedure to do so.

The rest is made up.

“So which Commandment is an “ecological sin” against?”

Excellent question. But some denominations have been making up stuff for a couple thousand years. What’s one more?

For “Protest”-ants the Bible appears to have simply ‘appeared’ out of thin air in the hands of ????? in about the Middle Ages.

The early Church fathers took much time and thought as to which books would be in the New Testament.

**John 21:25 There are many more things that Jesus did. If all of them were written down, I suppose that not even the world itself would have space ...
**Now there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if every one .... if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
**Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
==============================

There is nowhere in Scripture that says Scripture is the sole source of our faith. So why do some people say that "if it isn't written in the Bible, it's not the true"??

Who knows. It will depend on how the "sin" is worded.
It's interesting that so many non-Catholics care about what the Pope says.

Papal infallibility, in Roman Catholic theology, the doctrine that the pope, acting as supreme teacher and under certain conditions, cannot err when he teaches in matters of faith or morals.

Pope Francis probably didn't come up with this "ecology sin." It probably came from some of the 1.2 billion Catholics in the world who care deeply about the environment.

Do you think that the Chinese government cares about the environment? Hmmmm.
I was told that the Chinese [in China] believe in two things:
1. luck
2. money
