KEY WEST, Florida - A new survey from the Pew Research Center has found that not only do most Americans believe religion and politics shouldnt mingle, but Catholics are less likely than members of other Christian denominations to trust their clergy on hot-button issues.
According to the study results, American Catholics were found to be less likely than all the other major Christian groups to have a lot of confidence in their clergy to give advice on almost all of the religious and personal topics asked about in the survey.
Those topics include ones relationship with God, the interpretation of scripture, marriage and relationships, anxiety and depression, personal finances, abortion, immigration and global climate change.
Protestants generally had the highest levels of trust. Some 25 percent of Protestants described themselves as feeling very close to their clergy, while just eight percent of Catholics said they felt the same, which is a much lower share than in any other major U.S. Christian group analyzed.
Catholics and Protestants are equally at 53 percent on feeling somewhat close to their clergy.
Just 29 percent of Catholics said they trusted clergy a lot when it comes to meaningful guidance on abortion, and only 33 percent said they had some trust in clergy.

Not surprised.
That may explain Roman Catholic voting patterns in presidential elections.
So American Catholics are raging conservatives then?
American clergy is far too leftist.
Even many of the independent and southern Baptist preachers supported no fault divorce. There is so much pain, a pastor I once respected explained to me.
Its supposed to hurt. It should hurt and cost and financially cripple you and make you undesirable as a sexual partner.
That makes you not do it.
Im proud that a few weeks ago I walked out of Mass during the deacons homily on global warming delivered the Sunday after that
Maniac Swedish girl put on her show in New York.
You should be proud. Its a lot harder to do than youd think. Thank goodness the priests in my little town outside Phoenix have been pretty conservative so we agree on almost every issue. It would be harder to sit through Mass otherwise.
Key West? Is that the religious center of the universe....while looking for lost jigger of salt?
Well DUH! I’m in Pittsburgh where Catholics have been pulling the level overwhelmingly for Democrats for more than eighty friggin’ years.
Despite the fact that a lot of those Dems have never met an abortion that they wouldn’t vote for.
