This 66 year old Catholic is proud of these young people. God bless them!

Given the option, he should have chopped it into pieces, burned the pieces into ashes, and flushed the ashes into the sewer. But this Lutheran stands with the young Catholics, who seem to know the faith much better than their neo-pagan elders.

Something for your pinglist. Msgr. Charles Pope appears at the end.

As do I...The Church has survived reprobate popes in its past; it will survive the pagan pope if the people remain faithful...

As an alternative to the Tiber Toss, they could have got one of those chainsaw artists to carve the block of wood into a statue of Jesus and Mary, or crucifixes, or something. But the toss was ok, too.

I am hopeful for the future of the church. Most Catholics I know are embarrassed by the current pope. My daughter attends a Catholic church in her college town. Every mass is packed with college kids. Even the early mass on Sunday.

Don't minimize the situation. Frank is the last pope on the list and he was referred to as the "bad pope". The Catholic faith will live on but the Church, already experiencing schism, will not survive in its current form. Expect a much smaller (real) Church as Benedict suggested.

How many of those college kids follow the Church on those “inconvenient” matters — cohabitation and birth control? Are they in a State of Grace when receiving Holy Communion? I’m wondering if they are as Catholic as they think they are.

Who knows, but I know a lot of those kids and they are good kids.

Not meant to minimize; actually I agree with you but just did not go into the details...
The wheat will be separated from “the chaff”, and I envision that winnowing process will yield the smaller (real) church you’ve mentioned as suggested by Pope Benedict...
The establishment “church” may wither; it was the faith I was talking about...Best...LtM

You would be surprised at how many young people choose to live chaste lives. All we ever hear about are those absorbed into the “popular culture.”

I was at that Mass and it was extraordinary! It lasted 2.5 hours, and every seat in the Basilica was taken, there was SRO. And, the most amazing cross-section of attendees, every age, race, ethnicity. Truly memorable. The next day I told my pastor, who was one of the priests at the Mass, that when time comes for my funeral, I want it in Latin.
