Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)
Psalm 9
Psalm 9[a][b]
For the director of music. To the tune of The Death of the Son. A psalm of David.
1 I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;
I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
2 I will be glad and rejoice in you;
I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.
3 My enemies turn back;
they stumble and perish before you.
4 For you have upheld my right and my cause,
sitting enthroned as the righteous judge.
5 You have rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked;
you have blotted out their name for ever and ever.
6 Endless ruin has overtaken my enemies,
you have uprooted their cities;
even the memory of them has perished.
7 The Lord reigns forever;
he has established his throne for judgment.
8 He rules the world in righteousness
and judges the peoples with equity.
9 The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
10 Those who know your name trust in you,
for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.
11 Sing the praises of the Lord, enthroned in Zion;
proclaim among the nations what he has done.
12 For he who avenges blood remembers;
he does not ignore the cries of the afflicted.
13 Lord, see how my enemies persecute me!
Have mercy and lift me up from the gates of death,
14 that I may declare your praises
in the gates of Daughter Zion,
and there rejoice in your salvation.
15 The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug;
their feet are caught in the net they have hidden.
16 The Lord is known by his acts of justice;
the wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands.[c]
17 The wicked go down to the realm of the dead,
all the nations that forget God.
18 But God will never forget the needy;
the hope of the afflicted will never perish.
19 Arise, Lord, do not let mortals triumph;
let the nations be judged in your presence.
20 Strike them with terror, Lord;
let the nations know they are only mortal.
Footnotes:
1. Psalm 9:1 Psalms 9 and 10 may originally have been a single acrostic poem in which alternating lines began with the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet. In the Septuagint they constitute one psalm.
2. Psalm 9:1 In Hebrew texts 9:1-20 is numbered 9:2-21.
3. Psalm 9:16 The Hebrew has Higgaion and Selah (words of uncertain meaning) here; Selah occurs also at the end of verse 20.
New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)
This Song is an Acrostic. There are still songs like that written even to this day.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Annie had a nearly impossible homework assignment for her High School English class. She knew for a fact that all the other parents in the extremely affluent community were merely farming out the assignment to professional writers and publishers, but she wanted it to be from HER. The other kids would be handing in slick glossy publications that met all the criteria of the assignment, but it was not what she wanted to do. The teacher was assuming that all of her students had expensive desktop computers with publishing and graphics capabilities and printers. Here was the assignment:
Produce a 9 x 11 inch bound, full-color illustrated book of at least twenty poems. The poems had to be exactly written in twenty different styles, ie: sonnet, haiku, limerick, conture-poem, free verse, acrostic, etc. Some of these I had never heard of, but, evidently the forms had been mentioned in the English Class during the year. Some of them were really contrived, but what do I know?
Now, this teacher expected the student to devote all of their time to this project, to the detriment of Science, Math, History, Geography, Civics, Music, Sports, Social Life, and Family Life. So, of course, the parents, knowing that this assignment came up every senior year, just "farmed it out". That was wrong, but what could they do?
Anyway, Annie was different. She asked me for a little guidance with the poetry, but she did all of the artwork and actual writing.
Now, I'm a SONGWRITER, not a poet, and they really are different. Songs have a very strict meter, and the emphasis and stress on each syllable makes a big difference in the melody. A stress on an inappropriate word or syllable can make a song sound goofy. A perfect example of this is Handel's setting of part of Isaiah 53 where the chorus sings out "We like sheep!" when they mean to sing, "We, like sheep, (have gone astray)" It NEEDS those two commas to make sense. Setting a poem to music is MUCH harder than writing lyrics.
Anyway, I helped Annie with her project and she got an "A" but so did all the others who had professional jobs done. I wish that the teacher had not rewarded the kids (or their parents) for cheating, but what can you do? At least Annie knew in her heart that she had "Handeled" the project with integrity.
Let's look at today's Psalm.
The first thing we see is the Musical Direction. This is a song for the Music Director, and so probably liturgical. There is even a MELODY provided. ("The Death of the Son"). By the way, it is much easier to write new lyrics to an existing melody, which is why parodies are so popular.
Now, what the English translation DOESN'T show is that this is an ACROSTIC poem. That means that the first letter of each line is in order of either the Alphabet or a Phrase, like a word puzzle. In the case of Psalm 9, it is the first half of the Hebrew Alphabet, and continues in Psalm 10. For this reason, some translations combine the Psalms as 9A and 9B. That of course, messes up the numbers for the rest of the Psalter, so we will use the more current form of numbering them.
This Psalm celebrates and Thanks God for the wonders and miracles He has done, and exalts the Lord as a "Refuge For the Oppressed", a "Stronghold in Times of Trouble", and "The King Who Reigns Forever".
It is a Song of Praise, rejoicing in Salvation, and declaring that the enemy has fallen into his own trap.
Elements of Hebrew Poetry occur as Personification (Daughter of Zion = Jerusalem) and Parallelism (Arise...and...Strike). It is an awesome poem, but even better as lyrics. I wish I knew the Melody!

This is what the Lord says to you: Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but Gods. ...Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you. (2 Chronicles 20)

I have actually set a few Psalms to music. Psalms 1,2, 23, and 139. Since the English Translations are not “metered” I have had to shift the lyrics around to make them fit. Once, at a yard sale, I found an old Scottish Hymnal with METERED Psalms. This was, I suppose, for congregational singing. I found them a little awkward. In Hebrew, of course, they sound great!
By far, the best musical adaptation of Psalm portions (in my very humble opinion!!!!) were done in the 70’s by the Maranatha Singers from the early days of Calvary Chapel. I memorized a lot of Psalms by listening to their albums.
