Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 8

Psalm 8[a]

For the director of music. According to gittith.[b] A psalm of David.

1 Lord, our Lord,
    how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
    in the heavens.
2 Through the praise of children and infants
    you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
    to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
    which you have set in place,
4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
    human beings that you care for them?[c]

5 You have made them[d] a little lower than the angels[e]
    and crowned them[f] with glory and honor.
6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
    you put everything under their[g] feet:
7 all flocks and herds,
    and the animals of the wild,

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

I love "Science Programs." Now I am aware that many of the Science-Oriented TV programs have a political agenda, but, since I am somewhat hearing impaired, I can ignore most of the commentary and just enjoy the Hubble Pictures and speculative graphics depicting our magnificent Universe.

The scale of the universe is so massive that scientists have had to come up with new ways of measuring it. As I was growing up, I knew that the Sun was 93 Million Miles away from the Earth. That's a LOT! But, in the study of Astronomy, the "Mile" becomes woefully inadequate. So, scientists calculated how many miles LIGHT could travel in a year's worth of time. Since it was assumed that NOTHING could travel faster than Light, a new measurement was born, called a "Light Year" which is 5.88 trillion miles.

One would think that would be adequate, but it's not. And so, a new unit of measurement, called the Parsec was formulated. A Parsec is 3.26 Light-Years, and guess what...it's not big enough either. Some Super-Massive Black Holes are so HUGE that scientists have come up with an even more humongous measurement based upon the MASS of our own star, The Sun. Along with this huge amount of mass, comes a consequent amount of gravity, which swallows up everything around it, crushing, compressing, and condensing everything within the "neighborhood" around it. To get an idea of the immensity of this system, just think that the entire Milky Way Galaxy is merely the Accretion Disk of a Gigantic Super-Massive Black Hole at the center. I am glad that our beloved planet is located way out in the suburbs flung out on one on the flailing spiral arms of this Metropolis of Stars. Any closer to the center, and I doubt if we could escape utter destruction from the intense pressure.

And now, let's look at Psalm 8!

The Psalm starts with musical directions, "for the Chief Musician" or Musical Director. So we can deduce that this will be a corporate Psalm, for the use in Liturgy. The Chief Musician's job would have been to arrange this song for instruments and choir. The next word is strange though. The word "gittith" is a puzzle to Bible Scholars. It could mean "in the style of the Gittites from Gath" or it could mean "Song of the Wine-press."

Now where else in Scripture do we see a name for an agricultural machine that applies Pressure, Gravity, and Weight onto something to extract every last drop of juice or oil?

Well we have to go to the New Testament for that, to a Garden just outside of Jerusalem on the Mount of Olives. The name of the Garden is Gethsemane, which means "Olive Press". The Olive Oil Press was made of huge rocks whose shear weight would squeeze every last drop of olive oil from the hard little fruit. The olive oil was pure and used in the Temple. It has also become symbolic of The Holy Spirit. And the connection is made even more poignant because Jesus quoted this very Psalm concerning the Praise of Children in Matthew 21:16.

And so, in a song about the Heavens, the Incredible Work of God, David titles his song with an allusion to a Wine-Press, with incredible pressure, gravity, mass, and with a sweet and pure product.

Yeah...it's definitely "Song of the Wine-Press", not "The Gittite Song in the style of Gath". My opinion, anyway.

The (rhetorical) question is weighty, and properly humble. But the glorious answer, from our standpoint, is found in how He made us. There are lots of creatures which are “prettier” than we humans. But the reason He loves and prizes us so, is because we alone were made in His image. When He breathed into us His Spirit, man became a speaking spirit. Just like Him. Yes, we are currently in an Adamic fallen state. But that is why He went to such an unimaginable extreme to redeem any who will ask Him to.

Amen! And, beautifully, this Psalm also addresses that humans, made in God’s image, were made “a little lower than the angels”. The fact that the Author of Hebrews ties this in with an Eschatological meaning further emphasizes the Inspiration and Continuity of the Holy Scriptures.

It is indeed humbling.
