Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

Psalm 7

Psalm 7[a]

A shiggaion[b] of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning Cush, a Benjamite.

1 Lord my God, I take refuge in you;
    save and deliver me from all who pursue me,
2 or they will tear me apart like a lion
    and rip me to pieces with no one to rescue me.

3 Lord my God, if I have done this
    and there is guilt on my hands—
4 if I have repaid my ally with evil
    or without cause have robbed my foe—
5 then let my enemy pursue and overtake me;
    let him trample my life to the ground
    and make me sleep in the dust.[c]

6 Arise, Lord, in your anger;
    rise up against the rage of my enemies.
    Awake, my God; decree justice.
7 Let the assembled peoples gather around you,
    while you sit enthroned over them on high.
8     Let the Lord judge the peoples.
Vindicate me, Lord, according to my righteousness,
    according to my integrity, O Most High.
9 Bring to an end the violence of the wicked
    and make the righteous secure—
you, the righteous God
    who probes minds and hearts.

10 My shield[d] is God Most High,
    who saves the upright in heart.
11 God is a righteous judge,
    a God who displays his wrath every day.
12 If he does not relent,
    he[e] will sharpen his sword;
    he will bend and string his bow.
13 He has prepared his deadly weapons;
    he makes ready his flaming arrows.

14 Whoever is pregnant with evil
    conceives trouble and gives birth to disillusionment.
15 Whoever digs a hole and scoops it out
    falls into the pit they have made.
16 The trouble they cause recoils on them;
    their violence comes down on their own heads.

17 I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness;
    I will sing the praises of the name of the Lord Most High.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD, Our God,
How Majestic,
How Wonderful,
How Excellent is Your Most Holy Name!
You Alone Are Worthy to be Praised and Worshiped,
for You Alone Are the Most High,
Ancient of Days,
Rock Of Ages,
The All-In-All,
Aleph~Tav,
Alpha and Omega!
It is a Joy to Praise You,
because You Are So Awesome in Your Glory,
Endlessly Creative,
Infinitely Just and Righteous,
Eternally Holy and Pure,
Yet Incredible Patient and Forgiving,
Slow to Anger, and Full of Love!

How often, Dear Father,
Do we stress out over "Building our own house",
And neglect a proper dwelling place for Your Spirit!
Even as we strain at the external things,
pouring money down an endless hole of debt
In order to enhance and enrich our lives,
With Beautiful homes,
Beautiful Toys and Gadgets,
Even Beautiful faces and bodies,
And we leave our hearts vacant,
Or worse, piled with junk from this world.
No Wonder, we "sow much but gather little"!
No wonder we struggle for wages,
only to put them into a pocket full of holes!

For the Sake of Your Anointed,
and For The Sake of Your Name,
We pray for the Peace of Jerusalem,
For Israel,
According to Your Word,
and Your Promise.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In 1965 I was a very serious and "Justice" oriented teenager who thought she was going to change the world. When I heard about a new movie called The Great Race, I assumed it had to do with either The HUMAN Race, or perhaps the Civil Rights Movement. (Yeah, that's how my mind worked back then.) Anyway, what a surprise to me it was, as one of the funniest movies I had ever seen.

Jack Lemmon played a typical old-time movie villain named Professor Fate, and Tony Curtis played the impossibly clean-cut hero. The setting was an automobile race around the world (an actual historical event).

As the vehicles line up at the starting gate, Professor Fate runs through a checklist with Max, his bumbling assistant, played by Peter Falk. Max has been assigned to sabotage all the other cars in the race, leaving only the Tony Curtis character as competition. One by one, the other cars suffer break downs as Max describes his cheating. Then comes this:

Professor Fate: Genius, Max, positive genius! What's next?
Max: Car number 5, the engine falls out!
Professor Fate: Car number 5, hah hah hah hah! Uh Max... we're number 5.

And at that point, with perfect timing, the engine falls out of Professor Fate's car!

This illustrates a Biblical Principal that we touched briefly upon yesterday. This principle is also echoed in a Bob Marley Reggae Song called "Small Axe":

"Whosoever diggeth the pit,
Shall fall it."

Now let's look at Psalm 7.

The musical directions tell us that this is to be a "Shiggaion". This is a singular noun in the Hebrew, and only appears one other place in Scripture, in Habbakuk 3:1, in the plural. ("Shigganoth") In Habbakuk, the word is followed by a song, so it makes sense. It may be a type of musical form or instrument.

David wrote this song while he was on the run from Saul. Cush, a Benjaminite seems to have infiltrated David's entourage and was a spy for Saul. This Psalm explores Saul's relentless pursuit of David, which we know was motivated by jealousy and rage. David did not deserve this pursuit. If he deserved it, he would have admitted it and taken his "medicine".

In yet another instance of Parallel Couplets in Hebrew Poetry, David sings "Arise" and "Awake". This is very similar to previous Psalms. Then David uses Wonderful Metaphors that have become Descriptive Names of God, My Shield, My Defense, My Righteous Judge.

Finally, we come to the closing verses that echo the principle that Professor Fate learned the hard way.

15 Whoever digs a hole and scoops it out
falls into the pit they have made.
16 The trouble they cause recoils on them;
their violence comes down on their own heads.
