Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

Psalm 5

Psalm 5[a]

For the director of music. For pipes. A psalm of David.

1 Listen to my words, Lord,
    consider my lament.
2 Hear my cry for help,
    my King and my God,
    for to you I pray.

3 In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice;
    in the morning I lay my requests before you
    and wait expectantly.

4 For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness;
    with you, evil people are not welcome.
5 The arrogant cannot stand
    in your presence.
You hate all who do wrong;
6     you destroy those who tell lies.
The bloodthirsty and deceitful
    you, Lord, detest.

7 But I, by your great love,
    can come into your house;
in reverence I bow down
    toward your holy temple.

8 Lead me, Lord, in your righteousness
    because of my enemies—
    make your way straight before me.
9 Not a word from their mouth can be trusted;
    their heart is filled with malice.
Their throat is an open grave;
    with their tongues they tell lies.

10 Declare them guilty, O God!
    Let their intrigues be their downfall.
Banish them for their many sins,
    for they have rebelled against you.
11 But let all who take refuge in you be glad;
    let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
    that those who love your name may rejoice in you.

12 Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous;
    you surround them with your favor as with a shield.

1. Psalm 5:1 In Hebrew texts 5:1-12 is numbered 5:2-13.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

My Pastor (RIP, Jerry) worked as the worked as the Janitor of a huge church in Florida that had a million-dollar pipe organ, which he showed me once while taking me on his "rounds".

"Would you like to play it?" he asked.

I looked at the multiple-manual edifice before me, with all its switches, couplers, pedals, stops, buttons, and knobs, which looked for all the world like the control room of a nuclear power plant. I had played pipe organs before, but I had yet to pilot something that reminded me of the Space Shuttle.

Uh...No. I said. And that was that.

Psalm 5 contains a musical direction that occurs nowhere else in Scripture. "For Pipes" is hardly an adequate translation, because it calls to mind either a giant pipe organ, or perhaps a "pan-pipe" from Greek mythology. Scholars struggle with terms whose meanings are uncertain, and I have also seen "flutes" in this context. Flutes are everywhere in Ancient Cultures, so I think it may be the right word here. This is a Morning Prayer, and, at least the opening Invocation is easily set to music.

Thus begins the Psalmist's cry for help. First, we hear an affirmation of God's holiness and righteousness, and David's utter dependence upon God's Grace and Mercy.

David lists the evil lies and calumny that have been spread by his enemies. We know from the Ten Commandments that False Witness is akin to Murder, and David prays that the intrigue of the wicked will be their downfall.

Then, David expands his prayer to include the "godly" (there's that word again) who are the People of God, His "saints".

Concluding his prayer, David exalts the Name of God and prays that God will surround His People with favor as with a shield.

This is one of my favorite Psalms.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. ...Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.’” (2 Chronicles 20)

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

IVE ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation.

Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.

My voice shalt thou hear in the morning,
O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.

The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.

Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.

Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.

For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.

Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.

But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.

For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.
