Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

Psalm 3

Psalm 3[a] A psalm of David. When he fled from his son Absalom.

1 Lord, how many are my foes!
How many rise up against me!
2 Many are saying of me,
    “God will not deliver him.”[b]

3 But you, Lord, are a shield around me,
my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
4 I call out to the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy mountain.

5 I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
6 I will not fear though tens of thousands
    assail me on every side.

7 Arise, Lord!
    Deliver me, my God!
Strike all my enemies on the jaw;
break the teeth of the wicked.

8 From the Lord comes deliverance.
May your blessing be on your people.

Footnotes:

1. Psalm 3:1 In Hebrew texts 3:1-8 is numbered 3:2-9.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
How Hallowed,
Magnificent,
and Sanctified
is Your Most Holy Name!
How Blessed and How True is Your Word,
and How Mighty!
How Glorious,
to Span the Millennia,
To be Unfettered by Time and Space,
To Know The End from the Beginning
and the Beginning from The End!
For it is You, Oh LORD,
Who designed the Galaxies with Your Compass,
And Mapped Out the Vast Reaches of Space
With Your Word and Your Omniscient Imagination!
Scientists tell us even the heavens are finite.
But YOU are Infinite!
LORD, remind us ALWAYS to Worship You,
and not Your Creation.
Your creation is there but to proclaim YOUR GLORY.
Hallelujah and Amen.

For the Sake of Your Anointed,
and For The Sake of Your Name,
We pray for the Peace of Jerusalem,
For Israel,
According to Your Word,
and Your Promise.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

During the 1960's, it was the fashion of performing artists to give long introductions to their songs. Perhaps they thought it provided more intimacy with their audiences, and in the days of the small venues like coffee-houses and pubs, it may have worked that way. The verbal "patter" between songs didn't work at all in the huge stadium-like venues where amplification works for music, but not so well with conversational speech. Pretty soon it became unbearable with either bitter political speech ruining the performance or worse, a mumbled "I wrote this song at a very low point in my life when I was dumped by my girlfriend, both parents died, I went bankrupt, and couldn't pay the rent yada yada yada". At a recent concert I attended the female opening act went on and on about the outdoor venue, disparaging the stadium, because the last time she sang here, a bird pooped in her eye. I am not making this up. At another concert, where a friend had paid $300 to hear a woman whose voice was world-renowned, she had to sit through a nearly twenty-five minute rant against President Bush. In both cases, it was NOT what we had come to hear. And so, hence the expression: "SHUT UP AND SING!!!"

Anyway, let's get to Today's Psalm.

Psalm 3 starts with a very brief introduction. David wrote this song while he was fleeing from his son Absalom. We do not really need to know all the details, but, having just read the epic history in 1 & 2 Samuel, we know that this was a dire situation for David. Of the 150 Psalms, only 13 contain a brief biographical note at the beginning. David was not into "patter"

The brief intro sets the scene, and gives us ample information for the Psalm to follow.

We open with a complaint. David is surrounded by many foes, who are wicked oppressors mocking God and His servants. (v 1-2)

Verses 3 and 4 show David's confidence in God. He is a SHIELD, and this beautiful metaphor: "My Glory, and the Lifter of My Head". Even in English translation, this line is musical. The visual image of one's head being lifted gently from a downtrodden, morose, hang-dog position is a beautiful picture of Faith.

Next, (v 5-6) David expresses his serenity in the safety of God's protection. He is able to lie down and get a good night's sleep even though he is on the run from his rebellious son.

Verse 7 and 8 take up the sword, and is a perfect bit of Hebrew Poetry, where two imperatives are split into parallel (or contrast, depending on the poem). Here, David also uses two of the Wonderful Names of God with the two imperatives ("Arise" and "Deliver")

Finally, the last verse expresses confidence that the prayer will be heard and answered, and closes with a prayer for all the people.

Throughout the Psalm, we see a word "selah". Since scholars do not agree on its meaning, it is just carried over from the Hebrew and not translated. It is thought to be a musical term which just reinforces the point of this study.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. ...Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.’” (2 Chronicles 20)

Love the raw emotion of Psalm 3—I bet President Trump feels like that.

Joining in prayer, left that other site, for the Peace of Jerusalem.
