Makes a good, dramatic story but have my doubts on this one. Even the woman herself says the ceremony only “exacerbated” her ailment and caused problems “later in life”. Pretty tenuous but would make a good movie. I wouldn’t go to see it though because demons and evil spirits scare me.
I was thinking last night about my earlier comment to Mrs. Don-o. I now recall that back in high school, maybe 10th grade, an American Indian man did say some kind of native prayer for me because I was untenably depressed and anxious at the time. Maybe that is why I have been prone to chronic ailments ever since. /s.
Mock at your own risk.
If you don’t believe that the demonic can afflict one’s health, you need to read the gospels and see what Jesus spent a good part of His time doing.
Also, if you give them an invitation to come in, they will do it, and that can happen when you participate in demonic activities, even something as innocuous sounding as a prayer from a shaman. Because what he’s praying to, unless he’s a Christian, is NOT God.
Chronic illness is not always, not even usually, caused by diabolical activity, but that absolutely can be one of the causes. Jesus and His apostles and disciples were, among other things, itinerant exorcists.
Opening yourself in any way to demon action --- actually inviting them in, as this poor women apparently did, although she wasn't fully aware of all the implications at the time --- is an exceedingly dangerous thing to do.
We’re talking an entity here who has no trouble inciting people to slaughter babies in the womb.
He’s the consummate opportunist and is hate personified.
Of course he’s going to take advantage of every opportunity to destroy someone’s life whether they understood what they were doing or not.

I actually believe ALL of what you said -- so much so that I can have nightmares about it -- but don't necessarily buy into this particular purported case.
Well said, metmom.
I taught my boys to have NOTHING to do with the occult, not even as a joke. As metmom said, Satan is a ruthless opportunist.
Same here with my (wife’s) girls. No Ouija boards or anything even hinting at real-life demonics. I don’t even like typing the word ‘Ouija’ or similar, and consider it out of the question to view any movies (again), like ‘The Exorcist’, or any music which is even purported to be associated with the occult or Black Magic. I don’t want another 20 years of nightmares much less calling up demons. See, I might be even more averse to it than some of you guys!
I wouldn’t be too sure about that. I just got blown off for opposing yoga, which MANY Christians think is OK.
But very wise move on your part.
While I don’t see a demon behind every door and live in fear of it, there are certain things that are well known to be entry points and those have no place in my life either.
My late wife was from India and had no interest one way or the other in yoga. Some of the variants are indistinguishable from practice of Hinduism. For a while I did Tai Chi regularly, which I loved and wished I would have kept up. The main teacher in this area later became a deacon at the local Catholic ‘new’ church (not the Latin Mass parish that I attend). Tai Chi — as it was taught to us, physical moves only — had little to do with religion. But I can see how you could maneuver it that way if you put some effort into it.
Demonic activity is not limited to infirmity, but actually majors in doctrine. In which the devil mocks God with perverted imitations of what God has ordained.
Which is not limited to such basic perversions as idolatry rather than worship of God, and sexually placing same genders together vs male and female in marriage), but extends to other issues, esp. salvific ones. For the Adversary seeks to not simply physically harm God's creation, but wants their eternal damnation (rather than souls giving praise and glory to God in Truth) by perverting the gospel of grace (often adding and subtracting and misconstruing from what it written).
And which false hope includes Roman Catholic teaching on salvation, which process begins with becoming good enough inside to be with God (due to removal of "original sin" and by "infused" charity) effected by the act of baptism even morally incognizant souls (infants), and which thus usually ends with becoming good enough again (plus atoning for sins) to enter Heaven via suffering in RC Purgatory .
Instead, while nothing unclean shall enter God's Holy City, (Rv. 21:27) believers are already washed, sanctified and justified (1Co. 6:11) by effectual faith in the risen Lord Jesus to save them by His sinless shed blood, (Rem. 3;25 5:1; Eph. 2:8,9; Titus 3:5) and are already accepted in the Beloved on His account, and made to spiritually sit with Christ in Heaven, (Eph. 1:6; 2:6) and by Him have direct access to God in the holy of holies in prayer. (Heb. 10:19) And who, if they die in faith will go to forever be with the Lord at death. (Phil 1:23; 2Cor. 5:8 [we]; Heb, 12:22,23; 1Cor. 15:51ff'; 1Thess. 4:17)
And with the only suffering after this life being that of the loss of rewards (and the Lord's disapproval at that time) at the judgment seat of Christ, which one is saved despite the loss of, and which does not occur until the Lord's return and believers resurrection. (1Cor. 3:8ff; 4:5; 2Tim. 4:1,8; Rev.11:18; Mt. 25:31-46; 1Pt. 1:7; 5:4) And which resurrection being the only transformative the believer looks forward to after this life (Rm. 8:23; 2Co. 5:1-4; Phil 3:20,21; 1Jn. 3:2) not purgatory, which suffering commences at death in order to enable souls to enter Heaven.
I contracted an enterovirus from the water on the plane and was hospitalized in Lima on drips and strong medication for several weeks with an acute skin disease known as grand urticaria, which causes the skin to inflame, suppurate with poison and crack, the most distressing effect being disfigurement of the face and head, until the crust had fallen off. ..
the family were gathered for healing it later transpired for my healing. She encouraged me into the room crowded by several family members. I noticed on the shelf a lit candle, a glass of water (symbol for health), and two plaster Catholic saints, Cosmas and Damian, each covered in a plastic bag (to hold the spirits in, I was told).
There was a person in the center, wearing loose clothing, tearing her hair and screaming/chanting; it was a woman, but she seemed very large, manly and powerful. I was pushed toward her and she put her hands over my face and body with a chanting prayer. She then collapsed on the floor....
I thought some worse suppuration had happened to the crust on my face, so I excused myself and went to the bathroom. To my astonishment, the disfigurement and crust on my face had completely disappeared and my skin had become smooth and normal. I realized I had received a healing...
I never finished my thesis nor my degree, as I became acutely ill within six months of returning home. I remained on strong steroids and urticarial treatment under direction of St. Georges Hospital, London, while living at my parents home until I was strong enough to do a multilingual secretarial course and start a quiet life working...
With hindsight, I believe the physical illness throughout my life was exacerbated by the false healing in Brazil which I later learned was known as umbanda, the white healing aspect of the occult religion known as Macumba. The latter I experienced in Brazil when I went with friends one evening to attend a samba school event. I did not realize until too late that the beautiful and rhythmical spectacle of the samba dance would become a religious ritual of hate and revenge, Macumba, whereby the practice of killing chickens and extracting their blood is performed with the intent to raise natural spirits who would inspire/entrance someone to injure or kill a specific person, usually before the night was finished. The famous poesias and songs accompanying samba can be very dark, encouraging shunning light to enter darkness and suicide. ..
The spiritual aftermath of the false healing, however, was a far greater suffering. For 10 years afterward I experienced constant attacks and visitations of evil; the most notable was in my studio flat near Avenue Louise, Brussels. There I was woken one night by the sound of my windows crashing in the hall, kitchen and bathroom. I thought it was a burglar, but no one was there except for a hostile presence. I believed it was an unhappy spirit who had formerly lived in the flat, so I got up and prayed for the spirit for about two hours with my rosary. This occurred every night for a week until on the last day, the crashing was louder than usual. I realized I could not move, speak or open my eyes but sensed an overwhelming presence of evil around and above my bed. I felt I was being strangled...
Although troubling, I was not so afraid and kept up my prayers and Catholic life as best I could, but my faith had clearly been weakened and I felt very depleted and lacking in confidence. - http://www.ncregister.com/blog/edward-pentin/amazon
But see above post as well.
There are some things the movie got wrong but it got some things correct.
And no Ouija boards either!
You start messing with fire you get burned.
The rules for canonical exorcism in the Church stipulate that every possible natural cause (ranging from medical-psychiatric to outright fraud) must be examined and ruled out, before a hypothesis can be maintained that abnormal mental states or behaviors are caused by demonic possession.
The vast majority of requested exorcisms are denied because they are found to have physiologic/psychiatric causes.
The remaining, small number of cases advance to formal exorcism per se. Such cases exist. Medical experts admit this. In these cases, diabolic possession is the acknowledged cause, and expulsion of the bodiless malign entity is undertaken.
Did not know that.
But now I do. Glad I learned that before I started experimenting.
It’s always bugged me how Catholics have all this trouble with Demons.
My biggest Demonic problem lasted a month or two, and only because I told myself I was just imagining things, even as I was hearing bloody shouting from downstairs, or shouting from upstairs when I went downstairs. One prayer took care of the bugger. That was maybe a good 10 years ago now.
The only other time was maybe 4 or 5 months ago. I was about to fall asleep when, suddenly, a bright golden orb came in through the window, into the bedroom, and told me it was going to kill me. It gave off a huge amount of heat. (In fact, my face looked red in the mirror after the event.) Scared the living shit out of me, and for some bizarre reason I even lunged at it while crying out “LORD Protect me!” It blasted back out the window.
Of course, I could just be completely insane and don’t know it. Crazy people don’t typically know they’re crazy. But if it is madness, it’s at least a very rare type.
It is SO much cooler here in the fire than that darned frying pan!
I will pray for Mary’s prayers on you behalf. Jesus loves her very much.
