A pro-life display memorializing the unborn victims of abortion was destroyed by vandals Saturday outside a Catholic church in Pennsylvania.
The report is the latest in a growing string of harassment, assaults, vandalism and other incidents targeting pro-lifers.
Earlier this month, volunteers at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Buckingham, Pennsylvania, set up the pro-life display for Respect Life month, according to a news release. The 61 crosses in the display symbolize the 61 million babies who have been aborted since Roe v. Wade legalized abortion on demand in 1973.
The pastor Rev. Monsignor Joseph P. Gentili said 40 of the crosses were torn out of the ground, broken and thrown into piles sometime Saturday evening. He said two signs that read “Stop surgical abortions” also were stolen from the display.
Gentili said he reported the vandalism to the local police, and they have been supportive. He said the incident is being filed as a hate crime.
The church also is increasing security measures, and they plan to set up the pro-life display again as soon as possible, he added.
“Our simple and poignant message to express our respect for human life and to urge others to join with us in bringing the tragedy of abortion to an end, apparently is not appreciated nor shared by some others in our local community,” he wrote in a letter to the congregation that was shared with LifeNews. “Be that as it may be, it is sad and lamentable that we continue to struggle for the right to live and express ourselves in a democratic society that is supposed to take pride in basic and fundamental freedoms.”
In response to the crime, the church plans to hold a prayer vigil at noon Oct. 19 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church at the corner of Durham and Cold Spring Creamery roads in Buckingham, where the pro-life display is located. They plan to pray for those who committed the vandalism as well as for the unborn babies who continue to be destroyed daily in abortions.
The church is located just north of Philadelphia where, earlier this year, a state lawmaker filmed himself bullying young pro-life teenagers and an older woman outside a Planned Parenthood abortion facility. State Rep. Brian Sims, an abortion activist and Democrat, bullied the peaceful pro-life advocates and then offered $100 for the identities of three teenage girls who were praying outside with their mother. Sims never apologized to the pro-life advocates, and he remains in office.
Around the same time, another Catholic church in Philadelphia was vandalized with pro-abortion graffiti.
