Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)
Daniel 11
11 1 And in the first year of Darius the Mede, I took my stand to support and protect him.)
The King Who Exalts Himself
36 The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, for what has been determined must take place. 37 He will show no regard for the gods of his ancestors or for the one desired by women, nor will he regard any god, but will exalt himself above them all. 38 Instead of them, he will honor a god of fortresses; a god unknown to his ancestors he will honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts. 39 He will attack the mightiest fortresses with the help of a foreign god and will greatly honor those who acknowledge him. He will make them rulers over many people and will distribute the land at a price.[d]
40 At the time of the end the king of the South will engage him in battle, and the king of the North will storm out against him with chariots and cavalry and a great fleet of ships. He will invade many countries and sweep through them like a flood. 41 He will also invade the Beautiful Land. Many countries will fall, but Edom, Moab and the leaders of Ammon will be delivered from his hand. 42 He will extend his power over many countries; Egypt will not escape. 43 He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver and all the riches of Egypt, with the Libyans and Cushites[e] in submission. 44 But reports from the east and the north will alarm him, and he will set out in a great rage to destroy and annihilate many. 45 He will pitch his royal tents between the seas at[f] the beautiful holy mountain. Yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In 168BC, the mad tyrant Antiochus Epiphanes set up an altar to the pagan god Zeus in the Holy Temple of God in Jerusalem. Just to be extra nasty, he had a PIG sacrificed on the altar! This would definitely qualify as an "Abomination of Desolation". And yet, Jesus spoke of the "Abomination of Desolation" as a future event, and a sign of the End of Days. Indeed, there have been a number of structures and activities on that particular hill over the centuries that would qualify.
Just as there have been many A of D's in History, there have also been many "antichrists". Caesar, Napoleon, Stalin, Hitler, and numerous others through the ages have qualified. But the "upper-case" Antichrist is still to come. And the BIG "A of D" will be unmistakable to believers.
That is why when we read Apocalyptic Literature, we should be aware that there are at least four schools of interpretation:
1. Preterists believe that all of the Prophecies in both the Old and New Testament were fulfilled in 70AD when the Roman Emperor Titus destroyed the Temple and "left not one stone upon the other." (see Matthew 24) Some very respectable scholars share this view, but, in my humble opinion, it leaves a lot of unanswered questions and unfulfilled prophecies.
2. Historicists see prophecy as a long chain of unfolding events, from Biblical times to the End of Days. Some even can tell you EXACTLY where we are on the "timeline".
3. Futurists say that ALL prophecy is about the End Times and has yet to unfold at all.
4. Idealists see all prophecy as SYMBOLS of Eternal Truth.
Since all of these schools of thought have some merit, and all of them fall short, I personally believe that it is a combination of all four, and that many prophecies are fulfilled more than once. For example, prophecies concerning Exile, The Destruction of the Temple, and the Return of the Jewish People to their Homeland have all occurred more than once in the Panorama of History.
And so, my advice is this:
1. Always read Prophecy with an open mind. Read what it SAYS, not what someone TELLS you it says.
2. Always compare Scripture to Scripture. A Study Bible with copious Cross-References is a TREASURE.
3. Humbly ask The Holy Spirit to guide you in your reading.
4. Take advantage of the wonderful Study Tools available to you (Interlinear Bibles, Lexicons, Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, and, lastly, Commentaries)
And finally,whatever you do,
DON'T SET DATES!
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the purposes of His heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people He has chosen as His inheritance! (Psalm 33)
God Bless America!

Before you ask how “Museum Day” went, here goes: (posted earlier today in the Canteen”):
Ah. let me talk about Museum Day (sigh). It seems that Social Media has ruined it. Here Goes:
For many years, my bffs sister Pam, and my bff Dee have gotten tickets to Smithsonian-sponsored Museum Day. Pam used to get the tickets at her former place of employment, some high-falutin business in Boston. Since I moved back to MA, the two sisters have graciously invited me to come along and Pam always got four tickets so I could bring someone. Two years ago we went to the MFA, and last year we drove all the way out to Clinton, MA to the Museum of Russian Icons, which was spectacular.
This year we wanted to go to the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum, but it was not on the list so we opted to go to the MFA again, since there is so much to see. I planned on driving to Pams house, leaving my car there, and then Pam would drive us all into Boston. I wanted to bring my sister, but she had to babysit her grandchildren because her sons band was playing at some big rally on Boston Common. (more about that later).
And so, giving myself over an hour to go less than 20 miles, I set out.
The traffic north was bad on Rt 3. I could understand heavy traffic going SOUTH, as Rt 3 is the only big highway to get to Cape Cod. The huge Beltway of I-495 does indeed go to the Cape, but only after looping around the entire perimeter of the State of Massachusetts to get there. So, across the highway, the Southbound Lanes were at a total standstill. It was such a beautiful day that people wanted to catch the Cape before it turned into a bleak, deserted, windswept no-mans-land during the winter. But why the ridiculous traffic going NORTH?
Oh! I figured. Its Autumn. Even though we are not at peak color in MA yet, Ill bet the trees in NH and ME are awesome right now. So thats where the Northbound Traffic was headed. Also, wasnt there something going on at the Common?
After nearly an hour of feeling like a lonely red blood cell struggling its way through a totally cholesterol-choked artery, I could stand it no longer, so I veered off the highway two ramps earlier than my destination. I knew the area well, having worked there 30 years ago, so I knew a secret way to my bffs house. Better to avoid the infamous Route 9 anyway, a thoroughfare so congested and heinous that I wrote a Blues Song about it over 30 years ago.
My bff lives in the town that spawned Barney Frank. Nuff said.
So I parked my car in Pams driveway and we all piled into her car to go into town. By way of Route 9.
Well, the legendary traffic on Route 9 was even worse than I remembered it. Not only did it seem impossible to get into town, but the road was choked with SJWs with hairy armpits and $1000 bicycles. The town of Newton had placed green ugly rental bikes on every corner, which nobody uses because they have their own sleek lightweight racing bikes with eighteen speeds that they never use either. Pam was cursing and swearing as jaywalkers and bicycles wove in and out though the neighborhood streets, spreading themselves across the lane and not signaling. She was LIVID by the time we got to Huntington Avenue where the Grand Facade of the MFA dominates the environment...or at least USED to dominate. Now, it is dwarfed by huge modern buildings comprised of Northeastern University, Wentworth Institute, MassArt(my alma mater), and several hospitals. Traffic was routed all through the campus of these revered institutions, and on each corner was an ARMY of students, weaving through traffic, jaywalking, not looking at traffic etc. It was a nightmare. Then we turned the corner and saw THE LINE snaking around the entire city block and realized that this was the line of people waiting to get into the MFA!
Having been to Disney World, I knew instantly that there would be a four hour wait to get into the building, based on the length of the line. And the lines at Disney World were to get into a twenty-minute ride. These lines would NOT be moving as quickly because people linger at museums.
It was then I suggested we go back to Newton, have Chinese Food, and go shopping.
And thats what we did.
Oh...and the rally on the Common that caused such a strain on the traffic and public transportation was not for a candidate, or even a protest march. It was a rally in favor of marijuana.
Pam was certain that the crazy line at the MFA was the fact that Museum Day had been relentlessly advertised on Facebook and Twitter for WEEKS. And when something is free...well, you know.

Wow, what an experience!
Question: How does the average Joe identify a false prophet? There must be criteria a genuine prophet has to meet. One line of thought indicates that there are no more real prophets and they have already prophesied everything. Is there a Biblical reference about this? If we've already studied it, I missed that day or it went completely over my head. Also, if The Great I Am decides to give us another prophet, who are we to second guess Him?

“Don’t set dates.” Great advice. I have been asked about prophesy many times. There is a fifth category of interpretation that I find helpful. I recommend the reader try to understand scripture and especially prophetic scripture in terms of their own personal spiritual journey. Prophesy as allegory might fall into this category.
Have you been to the mountaintop? Have you suffered desolation? Have you had everything taken away, like Job, and found that your only comfort was your Heavenly Father?
We each experience history through our own lives. For me that is the most profound way to understand prophesy.

While there are sincere Bible teachers who say that there are to be no more prophecies (possibly citing Revelation 22) there is also Paul’s admonition in 1 Corinthians that we SHOULD “seek the greater gifts” especially prophecy!
So how does the Average Joe know which is real and which is false. Here’s what helps me discern:
1. If the prophet goes against the Word of God, saying he has a “new revelation” or “all the religions up till now have been wrong and I’m right”, he is probably a False Prophet.
2. If the “prophet” spouts fake and incorrect Elizabethan English in order to sound holy, watch out. God is quite capable of speaking in 21st Century American English. He also knows the correct verb forms that go with “Thee and Thou”, and would use correct 16th century grammar if He chose to speak in that form of Language.
3. If the “prophet” sets dates, you can be sure that date will pass by uneventfully. Real Prophets do not set dates. Even the prophecy of Daniel’s 70th week does not set a precise date for the Return of Messiah. If Daniel and Isaiah couldn’t set dates, what makes this guy think he can?
4. Finally, if a prophet says something will happen and it doesn’t, stay away! He’s lucky we don’t live in Ancient Israel though. Nowadays he might lose his TV show. In Biblical times he would have lost his LIFE.
Having been a Christian for nearly 40 years, I have met some real doozies.

BTW, the shortcut through Newton was the neighborhood of Andover-Newton Theological School, where I used to work in the Bookstore. That area has changed dramatically too.

That helps a lot! When you said “...goes against the Word of God...,” I thought, “Oh, no, you have to have a photographic memory.” The last three points brought great relief (have been thinking about it for five years or but it never came up in conversation).
