Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

Daniel 9

The Seventy “Sevens”

20 While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel and making my request to the Lord my God for his holy hill— 21 while I was still in prayer, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice. 22 He instructed me and said to me, “Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding. 23 As soon as you began to pray, a word went out, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed. Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision:

24 “Seventy ‘sevens’[c] are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish[d] transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.[e]

25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One,[f] the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing.[g] The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’[h] In the middle of the ‘seven’[i] he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple[j] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.[k]”[l]

Oh how I struggled with this Chapter this morning! There are so many theories about the "70 Weeks of Daniel", that, no matter how many I present, I will leave out somebody's favorite theory. And the one I leave out will probably be the RIGHT one! Never mind. Scholars have been debating this Chapter for 2500 years or so, and they are all smarter than I am, so bear with me.

The Prophecies are so awesome that they actually caused Daniel a great deal of anxiety. The Messenger from God had to calm and comfort the great Prophet after sharing the cataclysmic and disturbing future. As if Daniel hadn't been through enough! But this is an indication of the Burden of the True Prophet. It's not an enviable position, nor is it particularly lucrative. In Ancient Israel a FALSE Prophet would be put to death, according to the Law of Moses, so it was dangerous as well. With that in mind, let us look at Daniel's Vision.

Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision:

Daniel was praying for his People, for his Country, and, in particular, for JERUSALEM. That really appealed to me, as I have been doing the same thing for 37 years, nine of them right here on this Thread. My prayers since October 1984 was that whoever was POTUS at the time would do the right thing and move The US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the Capital of Israel. This particular prayer was answered soon after President Trump took office in 2017. I am still in awe at God's answer to my prayer, but it took a while! From this verse we also see that Daniel's Prayer was heard immediately, but answered in God's Timing. I honestly don't know why God took over 30 years to answer my prayer, but I DO know that His timing was PERFECT.

24 “Seventy ‘sevens’[c] are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish[d] transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.[e]

If "sevens" mean "weeks" (and the Hebrew words are nearly the same), and a day = a year (which is common in Hebrew poetry and prophecy) then, "79 7's" means 490 years. This is approximately the amount of time between the Lifetime of Daniel and the events of The New Testament. But it gets even more complex than that.

25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One,[f] the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing.[g]

Here is where the scholars part company. I will share the one I believe is correct. Cyrus The Persian graciously gave a decree to rebuild Jerusalem and the Temple. This is recorded in the Biblical Books of Ezra and Nehemiah, but is also referred to in Cyrus's own records and on the famous Cylinder of Cyrus. Persian Tradition looks upon Cyrus as a great and enlightened king and an early champion of human rights. While THAT may be an exaggeration, the Decree to Rebuilt is very Historic and Real. From the Decree to the building is described as 7 + 62 years which adds up to 69. But what about the 70th week? We will read about that in the continuation of this verse, but first, look at what it says next. The Anointed One (The Messiah) will be "cut off and have nothing." Who on earth could kill The Messiah? Isn't He supposed to be a conquering hero? No wonder this was making Daniel anxious!

The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’[h] In the middle of the ‘seven’[i] he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple[j] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.[k]”[l]

Well we all know that The Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70AD. This was even more traumatic than the destruction that took place by Babylon, because the Jewish People were dispersed and left to wander for nearly 2000 years. The Foundation of the State of Israel with Jerusalem as its Capital is one of the biggest miracles in History. And this HUGE Miracle has happened during the lifetimes of many people reading this thread today. It is also a concern of nearly every nation on the planet, whatever their religion happens to be. Why so much controversy over a tiny sliver of land and a city that has no port, no major river, no access to the sea, and no use to anybody except the People who love her?

Now, let's look at this cross-reference, from a sermon by Jesus:

I included the footnotes so you can see that Jesus was referring back to the Book of Daniel without reservation or apology. He speaks of ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ as if it is yet to come, and will be a sign of the End of Days. While Jesus could have been speaking of the Destruction in 70AD, He also could have been speaking of the End of the World. Or...He could have been speaking of BOTH. That would not be an unusual thing in Bible Prophecy. But we still need to talk about that 70th week.

Many scholars believe that the 70th Week is the Seven-Year Tribulation that will occur just before the Second Coming of Christ. Now there are many schools of thought as to WHEN during that 70th Week that Those Who Are In Christ will meet Him in the air, and people will defend their positions vehemently. All I know is that I want to BE there when it happens! So I am not going to argue about it.

Poor Daniel. No WONDER he was having an anxiety attack over this!
