Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

Daniel 4

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream of a Tree

4 [a]King Nebuchadnezzar,

To the nations and peoples of every language, who live in all the earth:

May you prosper greatly!

2 It is my pleasure to tell you about the miraculous signs and wonders that the Most High God has performed for me.

3 How great are his signs,
    how mighty his wonders!
His kingdom is an eternal kingdom;
his dominion endures from generation to generation.

4 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace, contented and prosperous. 5 I had a dream that made me afraid. As I was lying in bed, the images and visions that passed through my mind terrified me. 6 So I commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be brought before me to interpret the dream for me. 7 When the magicians, enchanters, astrologers[b] and diviners came, I told them the dream, but they could not interpret it for me. 8 Finally, Daniel came into my presence and I told him the dream. (He is called Belteshazzar, after the name of my god, and the spirit of the holy gods is in him.)

9 I said, “Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and no mystery is too difficult for you. Here is my dream; interpret it for me. 10 These are the visions I saw while lying in bed: I looked, and there before me stood a tree in the middle of the land. Its height was enormous. 11 The tree grew large and strong and its top touched the sky; it was visible to the ends of the earth. 12 Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit abundant, and on it was food for all. Under it the wild animals found shelter, and the birds lived in its branches; from it every creature was fed.

13 “In the visions I saw while lying in bed, I looked, and there before me was a holy one, a messenger,[c] coming down from heaven. 14 He called in a loud voice: ‘Cut down the tree and trim off its branches; strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the animals flee from under it and the birds from its branches. 15 But let the stump and its roots, bound with iron and bronze, remain in the ground, in the grass of the field.

“‘Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let him live with the animals among the plants of the earth. 16 Let his mind be changed from that of a man and let him be given the mind of an animal, till seven times[d] pass by for him.

17 “‘The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of people.’

18 “This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me what it means, for none of the wise men in my kingdom can interpret it for me. But you can, because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Holy, Holy, Holy,
LORD, God of Power and Might,
Heaven and Earth Are Filled With Your Glory! How Truly Wonderful You Are, Dear Father!
And How Precious Is Your Holy Name!

We are not ashamed,
Abba, Father,
To Do what seems foolish to the World,
to lift up our hands in Praise to You,
In Adoration,
and in Worship.
What we would never give to another person,
Our Total and Complete Surrender,
We Give to You Without Reservation, or Embarrassment!
It is a Good Thing to Give Praise to You,
and Right and Fitting to give You Glory,
As Befits Your Holiness!

We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According To Your Word.
According To Your Promise,
According to The Words In Your Holy Scripture.
We Are Not Ashamed.
We Thank You That You Have Given Us This Direction,
And Are Happy To Obey You!

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Some of the greatest treasures of English and American Fiction are the Epistolary Novels. These are novels written in the form of letters back and forth between the characters. Since that alone would be somewhat boring, the novel also includes imaginary news articles, announcements, journal entries, Log Books, diaries, and some narrative to move the plot along. It is not an easy way to write a story, and, if not done correctly, can produce a jumble of thought that can instantly turn off the reader.

Perhaps the greatest example of an Epistolary Novel is Bram Stoker's "Dracula". It starts right off with the Journal entries of a clueless real estate broker sent to Transylvania to pass papers on a house in England with a foreign buyer, who happens to be a Vampire. There is very little actual narrative in "Dracula." Stoker manages to keep with the Epistolary format all the way to the end, and it is delightful!

Two other great books that dip into this format (though not as relentlessly as "Dracula", are Lew Wallace's "Ben Hur", and Herman Melville's "Moby Dick". "Moby Dick", in particular, goes off on long tangents about the shape of a whale's head, the color white, and, one of my favorite foods, Chowder!

Modern novels do not seem to be able to achieve the same success as 19th Century Novels do with this format. Could it be that we have lost the art of writing letters, in favor of the infamous "Tweet"? It' s kind of sad.

Anyway, back to the Bible! The Bible has a number of Books that are Epistolary in nature, most notable, the Epistles! (LOL). But, other Books use this format as well. The Book of Acts, which we studied recently, is chock full of letters, sermons, decrees, speeches, weather reports, news items and, of course, narrative. The Prophetic Books swing between Narrative, History, conversations, and Prophetic Utterances (usually formatted as poetry). And, the Book of Daniel has all of these factors, from the Narrative of the Captivity, to Dreams, Prayers, Conversations, and, at the end, Apocalyptic Prophecy.

Today, our reading demonstrates the true meaning of "Epistolary", as we begin reading a letter from King Nebuchadnezzar himself.
