Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

Daniel 1

Daniel’s Training in Babylon

1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried off to the temple of his god in Babylonia[a] and put in the treasure house of his god.

3 Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility— 4 young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians.[b] 5 The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king’s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king’s service.

6 Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 7 The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.

8 But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. 9 Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel, 10 but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your[c] food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”

11 Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12 “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.” 14 So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.

15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. 16 So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.

17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.

18 At the end of the time set by the king to bring them into his service, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. 19 The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s service. 20 In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.

21 And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.

Footnotes:

1. Daniel 1:2 Hebrew Shinar
2. Daniel 1:4 Or Chaldeans
3. Daniel 1:10 The Hebrew for your and you in this verse is plural.

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

There was a controversy in the Religion Forum about the Authorship and Date of the Book of Daniel. However, Jesus spoke of the Prophecy of "The Prophet Daniel" in His Teaching about the End of Days, and spoke of it as a long-term future prophecy. He thus affirmed that the Book and the Author were what they said they were. When given a choice between a 19th Century Liberal Bible Commentator's opinion and the Testimony of Jesus, you KNOW Whom I will choose to believe!

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Back in 2011, after my husband died, I went to the Broward County Animal Shelter to get a companion. "Take your pick," said the official." We have 247 dogs up for adoption. How many do you want?"

Well, of course I only wanted one, so I started walking past the cages. At each gate, a homeless pit bull rushed to me as if barking out "TAKE ME!!!! TAKE MEEE!!!", and it was a wee bit intimidating. Then I got to a cage where a little black dog of indeterminate breed sat down, put up a paw, and rolled her eyes as if to say, "Don't listen to those fools! I'm the one for you!" And so, I brought "Lynn" home, and changed her name to "Lynn-DAH" because a dog's name should have two syllables. (JMHO)

Lynn-DAH weighed 33 pounds when I adopted her. I bought her a bed, a crate, and appropriate toys for her size. However, after just ONE MONTH of living with me she weighed 50 pounds, and was NOT fat. She just had been so skinny that normal eating got her up to her proper weight in a month.

Just this week, there was a news item about a boy in the UK whose diet from childhood consisted only of "chips" (French Fries) and soda-pop. He was admitted to the hospital;, suffering from severe malnutrition which brought about Blindness...yes. You read that right. It is unknown whether or not the doctors will be able to restore his sight. It is a very sad story.

The effects of malnutrition must have been quite evident to the Babylonian Official in charge of David and his companions. They were members of the nobility, so they may have eaten better than common folk, but Jerusalem had just undergone a siege that was so bad that some had resorted to cannibalism. So, although Daniel and his three friends are described as "healthy", they were probably not the ruddy, chubby, youths pictured in Children's Bibles!

So the Official had a job to do. Fatten these kids up, train them, teach them Babylonian Language and Customs, and make them acceptable servants to the King. The first thing he did was change their God-Honoring Hebrew Names with Babylonian names. Then he attempted to feed them choice food and wine from the King's Own Table. There was no indication that this food was "unclean" according to Mosaic Law. But, if it was the King's Food, it had been dedicated to the King's gods...and so it was "defiled".

Daniel's solution was a finite one: "Just give us plain vegetables for ten days, and see what happens." Ten days is enough to see if the food is adequate, but not enough to cause malnutrition. It is the first of many instances of Daniel's great wisdom. But even in these initial stages of this wonderful Book, Daniel completely trusts in God for this wisdom, and for the outcome of this "experiment".

God honored this Trust and Integrity, by making Daniel and his friends even healthier and more handsome than the other captives.

Amen. Interesting that GOD gave them knowledge, not just wisdom and understanding.
