Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

2 Kings 20

Hezekiah’s Illness

20 In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, “This is what the Lord says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.”

2 Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, 3 “Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.

4 Before Isaiah had left the middle court, the word of the Lord came to him: 5 “Go back and tell Hezekiah, the ruler of my people, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the Lord. 6 I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.’”

7 Then Isaiah said, “Prepare a poultice of figs.” They did so and applied it to the boil, and he recovered.

8 Hezekiah had asked Isaiah, “What will be the sign that the Lord will heal me and that I will go up to the temple of the Lord on the third day from now?”

9 Isaiah answered, “This is the Lord’s sign to you that the Lord will do what he has promised: Shall the shadow go forward ten steps, or shall it go back ten steps?”

10 “It is a simple matter for the shadow to go forward ten steps,” said Hezekiah. “Rather, have it go back ten steps.”

11 Then the prophet Isaiah called on the Lord, and the Lord made the shadow go back the ten steps it had gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.

And How We Love To Sing With The Angels as they Behold You,

Abba Father, We Are in Awe of Your Magnificence!

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

I am so old that I remember Chief Engineer Montgomery Scotty utter those words on STAR TREK (The Original Series). Only, of course, it was with a heavy Scottish burr so the spelling would be different. The point is, of course, that Captain Kirk was asking Scotty to push the engines far beyond their capacity, which was physically impossible. Using ingenuity and sheer chutzpah, Kirk, Scotty, and the intrepid crew of the Starship Enterprise won the day. And Scotty's statement became something that didn't exist back then...a meme.

King Hezekiah, faced with death, does the right thing...he PRAYS. His prayer does not alter the Sovereignty of God, but actually illustrates it. Even if a man is struck with a terminal illness, and is "fated" to die, even if all the learned physicians say there is no hope, even if the natural state of the body is at the point when it can no longer sustain life, God is able to override all of that and reverse the "Laws of Physics" in His Sovereignty. After all, He invented them in the first place.

Modern Science may scoff at the Sign of God's Promise requested by Hezekiah. He wasn't just asking for a shadow to move backward. He was asking God to disrupt the rotation of Planet Earth and turn back time. Time Travel has its own set of problems, but most theorists will posit that, while it may be possible to go forward in time, due to Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, going backward presents just too many paradoxes and alternate timelines to be practical. And yet, when we look at the stars in the sky, we are actually looking backward in time, because the light from that star took millions of years to reach us.

So, Hezekiah asks God for this "proof" of His Omnipotence.

Instead of ZOTTING Hezekiah for his impudence, God performs this amazing, cosmic miracle. Since there are no records of an earth-shattering cataclysms that year, God must have done this without hurting anybody. God IS in control, and He can "change the Laws of Physics" whenever He wants to.

A little side note: Isaiah makes a poultice of figs for Hezekiah, which was a remedy of the day. People who refuse medical care to show off their faith are not doing themselves or God any favors. God gives us wise and learned people who minister to our bodies as healthcare professionals. This is a small detail in this story that sometimes is not noticed!

N those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live. Then he turned his face to the wall, and

prayed unto the LORD, saying,

Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD.

And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.

And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.

And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the LORDwill heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the LORD the third day?

And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the LORD, that the LORDwill do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees?

And Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees: nay, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees.

And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the LORD: and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz.

They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Also, the fig tree symbolizes Israel, and the leaves look like the letter “SHIN” in Hebrew. “SHIN” is very important, as it symbolizes The God of Israel (El Shaddai) and is the first letter in the “Shema” which is the Jewish declaration of faith.

It makes sense that the fruit of a tree that represents Israel and has leaves that Declare The Name of God would have healing properties!
