Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

2 Kings 18

Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem

17 The king of Assyria sent his supreme commander, his chief officer and his field commander with a large army, from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. They came up to Jerusalem and stopped at the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Washerman’s Field. 18 They called for the king; and Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went out to them.

19 The field commander said to them, “Tell Hezekiah:

“‘This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: On what are you basing this confidence of yours? 20 You say you have the counsel and the might for war—but you speak only empty words. On whom are you depending, that you rebel against me? 21 Look, I know you are depending on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff, which pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it! Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who depend on him. 22 But if you say to me, “We are depending on the Lord our God”—isn’t he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, “You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem”?

23 “‘Come now, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses—if you can put riders on them! 24 How can you repulse one officer of the least of my master’s officials, even though you are depending on Egypt for chariots and horsemen[e]? 25 Furthermore, have I come to attack and destroy this place without word from the Lord? The Lord himself told me to march against this country and destroy it.’”

26 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, and Shebna and Joah said to the field commander, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, since we understand it. Don’t speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.”

27 But the commander replied, “Was it only to your master and you that my master sent me to say these things, and not to the people sitting on the wall—who, like you, will have to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?”

28 Then the commander stood and called out in Hebrew, “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria! 29 This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. He cannot deliver you from my hand. 30 Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the Lord when he says, ‘The Lord will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’

31 “Do not listen to Hezekiah. This is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then each of you will eat fruit from your own vine and fig tree and drink water from your own cistern, 32 until I come and take you to a land like your own—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey. Choose life and not death!

“Do not listen to Hezekiah, for he is misleading you when he says, ‘The Lord will deliver us.’ 33 Has the god of any nation ever delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria? 34 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah? Have they rescued Samaria from my hand? 35 Who of all the gods of these countries has been able to save his land from me? How then can the Lord deliver Jerusalem from my hand?”

36 But the people remained silent and said nothing in reply, because the king had commanded, “Do not answer him.”

37 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went to Hezekiah, with their clothes torn, and told him what the field commander had said.

Footnotes:

1. 2 Kings 18:2 Hebrew Abi, a variant of Abijah
2. 2 Kings 18:4 Nehushtan sounds like the Hebrew for both bronze and snake.
3. 2 Kings 18:14 That is, about 11 tons or about 10 metric tons
4. 2 Kings 18:14 That is, about 1 ton or about 1 metric ton
5. 2 Kings 18:24 Or charioteers

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

This Scene of Battlefield Insults would be almost comical if it weren't so deadly.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD, Our God,
How Excellent is Your Name Over All the Earth!
You Alone Are Worthy;
You Alone Are Holy;
You Alone Are The One True God of Abraham!

We Come Into Your Presence With Singing,
And Into Your Courts With Praise.
For You Are The Judge Of All The Earth,
And You Are Eternally Righteous and Just!

Oh Father, The Wicked say that You do not see,
But You are "El Roi", The God Who Sees!
They say that You Have Forgotten Your people and Your heritage,
But Your Word tells us that You are faithful and True!
Your Word tells Us That You Have Engraved Zion
On The Very Palms of Your Hands!

Arise, Oh LORD,
Your Enemies Be Scattered!
Let The Whole Earth be Full of The Knowledge of The LORD,
As The Waters Cover The Sea!
For It Is Not By Might,
Not By Power,
But By Your Spirit, Abba,
That We Shall Overcome!

Abba, Thank You for the Assurance
That You will NEVER Cast Off Your People.
You Have Said It.
We Believe You.
That's All There Is To It. Amen and Amen.

Dear Father,
Not only do we ask You to intervene in the affairs of nations,
We Pray For You Peace that Passes Understanding
To Reign in the Hearts and Minds of All Who read these words today.
Deliver us from evil and minister comfort and delight to our souls, Oh LORD.

We Pray For Our Nation,
Our Beloved USA,
That You Will Bring About Repentance and Revival,
And Turn The hearts of the people Back To You,
Restore Honor, Integrity, and Peace.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins of Our Own Nation as well,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Good Morning, Prayer Warriors! I am sure you recognize the fellow in this morning's graphic. You may not remember his real name, but he has become well known by the title of "Baghdad Bob". His real name is Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf, and he served as the Iraqi Information Minister under the dictator Saddam Hussein. Baghdad Bob attained immortality on the Internet by spouting outrageous propaganda on international TV that was so blatantly false that it caused instant hilarity and mirth to anyone witnessing his performance. He boasted that Baghdad was safe and secure, while meanwhile, behind him, even the casual observer could see the city being pounded to rubble. I know he was probably just doing his job, but the net effect of his oratory will forever be an Internet Meme. What a way to achieve immortality...as a JOKE!

What was comical to Western sensibilities was actually a cultural norm in that part of the world since time immemorial. Shouted Battlefield Taunts, Propaganda, and Psychological Warfare were as much weapons of war as swords and spears. In today's Reading, we see it in full flower as Sennacherib's Field Commander shouts out to the Defenders of Jerusalem.

First, he addresses the Judeans in their Native Language, Hebrew. Even after the Judean Diplomats ask him to use the Diplomatic Language of the day, which was Aramaic, the Field Commander continues in the language of the common people. He obviously wants to influence the common foot-soldiers and civilians to hear his taunts as he bellows them across the battle lines.

Then, he taunts the Judeans that they can't rely upon their allies (Egypt) to help them. Using colorful language, he compares Egypt to a splintered reed, that will collapse and pierce the hand that leans on it.

After that, he taunts Hezekiah's reforms, claiming that, because the king removed the pagan shrines, the "gods" won't listen to the people. Here is his first mistake. He was immersed in his own theology and was unable to grasp the concept of The One True God. His own concept was the pagan belief that each nationality had their own set of gods, and, since the other "gods" fell to the Assyrians, the Hebrew "god" would do so too. It was his first "Baghdad Bob" moment.

This is followed by the Field Commander denigrating Jerusalem's own defending forces, and saying that they will be easily conquered.

As he gets more frustrated, the Field Commander throws out some potty insults.

Next, he tries to bribe the people with tales of splendor and prosperity that would await him if they would surrender. That was so blatantly false that I imagine that the people just rolled their eyes when they heard that one.

Finally, he addresses the people directly and tells them not to trust their king OR their God.

On Hezekiah's orders, the people do not respond to these insults. To do so would only encourage the enemy as it would escalate into confusion and weaken the people's resolve. Hezekiah was a good king, and had the mighty Prophet Isaiah as his advisor. What a team!

The Ancients had only two forms of "media", the written word and the art of oratory. We, on the other hand, are bombarded daily by those two, plus TV, Radio, the Internet, Social Media, Videos, and Texting. People carry their media with them, and often engage their own private media while in the presence of other breathing, talking, humans who are being shunned in favor of a "device". What a ripe field for propaganda and mind-control! Baghdad Bob never had it so good.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the purposes of His heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people He has chosen as His inheritance! (Psalm 33)

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

. the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jeru-
salem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is
_____in the highway of the fuller's field.
And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.

And Rabshakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?

Thou sayest, (but they are but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?

Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.

But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?

Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.

How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews' language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?

Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:

Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:

Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:

Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.

Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand?

Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand?

But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
