Monsignor Pope Ping!
His sin was striking the rock when God told him to speak to it. Lack of faith is a stumbling block to salvation.
There is a postscript: Moses got to enter the promised land the day of the Transfiguration. God’s anger is for a moment, God’s favor is for a lifetime (Psalm 30:5).
Yet Moses had a speech challenge if I not mistaken.
After when God took Moses home.
Parting the Waters without a permit from the Egyptian EPA
Thanks for posting this! Ive been pondering this question since yesterdays reading.
Killing an Egyptian slavemaster was his sin.
Very intriguing point, worth thinking about.
Killing an Egyptian slavemaster was his sin.
I think, too, that he sinned by taking the credit for the miracle on himself. He probably was so angry and so worn out that he just didn’t think. But God says he shares his glory with no one. Moses wasn’t capable of making water come out of the rock.
The sin was anger. God holds leaders and those who are righteous to much higher standards than ordinary people. Thats why the punishment was so severe.
There is an observation that Moses had a speech impediment so it could not be claimed that he beguiled people like a TV evangelist.
I think his major sin was taking credit [pride] for the miraculous provision of God. Also he reminded me of the heart of Jonah he was upset with the people and grudgingly struck the rock with anger. These were good verses to ponder as pride , anger and entitlement are a struggle for me.
The major sin of Moses, was one we all fight daily, if not minute by minute, the hardest for humans to steer clear of: PRIDE!
I’ve always thought that it was in striking the rock TWICE, rather than just once. A lack of trust of God on the part of Moses.
Could you provide a reference for that? I'd like to see it in context because John 17 seems to send the opposite message. Jesus did say it's the Father's good pleasure to give us the kingdom.
Moses double clicked.
God: MOSES! CLICK the rock once.
Moses click?
God: Ehem ahh... STRIKE, strike the rock once.

I see striking the Rock as a Type of the crucifixion of Christ, who was broken for us.
Moses struck the Rock twice, which I see as ‘crucifying the Son of God afresh (Heb 6:6, below)
This would be a lot more serious than just Moses’ pride, disgust with the Hebrews, etc., and would explain the more serious repercussions.
Hebrews 6:
4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
