Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

2 Kings 13

Jehoahaz King of Israel

13 In the twenty-third year of Joash son of Ahaziah king of Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned seventeen years. 2 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord by following the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit, and he did not turn away from them. 3 So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and for a long time he kept them under the power of Hazael king of Aram and Ben-Hadad his son.

4 Then Jehoahaz sought the Lord’s favor, and the Lord listened to him, for he saw how severely the king of Aram was oppressing Israel. 5 The Lord provided a deliverer for Israel, and they escaped from the power of Aram. So the Israelites lived in their own homes as they had before. 6 But they did not turn away from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit; they continued in them. Also, the Asherah pole[a] remained standing in Samaria.

7 Nothing had been left of the army of Jehoahaz except fifty horsemen, ten chariots and ten thousand foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had destroyed the rest and made them like the dust at threshing time.

8 As for the other events of the reign of Jehoahaz, all he did and his achievements, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 9 Jehoahaz rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria. And Jehoash[b] his son succeeded him as king.

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

Back to the northern Kingdom we go, and more bad kings.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father In Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
You Alone Are Worthy To Be Praised And Worshiped,
For Your Alone Are Holy,
Righteous,
and Infinitely Just!
You Are Eternally Faithful,
and there is no Shadow of Turning with You.
Light and Darkness Can Not Occupy The Same Space,
and There is No Darkness With You.
Good and Evil Can Not Dwell Together,
And There is No Evil With You.
Yet You Always Judge Rightly,
With Grace and Truth,
Justice and Mercy,
Wisdom and Kindness,
Firmness and Gentleness.

LORD, You desire Truth in Our Inward Parts.
There is no way we can hide from You,
what is going on inside,
no matter what we say with our lips.
That being said,
And Even as You Know Every thought,
You STILL Open Your Everlasting Arms to hold us,
To be Our Strong Tower,
Our Only Refuge,
Our Rock and our Redeemer.
There is no other.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins of Our Own Nation as well,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

It is a big temptation to skim over these passages, as they depict one evil king after another. But, if we do that, we miss some incredible revelations of God's Amazing Grace. We read:

Jehoahaz son of Jehu became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned seventeen years.

Seventeen years was longer than most of these bad kings, but not as long as some of the Kings of Judah. A lot can happen in seventeen years. For a comparison, look at the four terms of FDR, which, if he had not died in the last term, would only have been sixteen years. During those four terms America experienced Prohibition, The Great Depression, WW2, and the beginning of the Atomic Age. That puts the reign of Jehoahaz into perspective.

God's Amazing Grace come in when Jehoahaz seeks Him. This is not saying that Jehoahaz has repented of his sins. The Bible doesn't say that. It just says that He "sought the Lord’s favor, and the Lord listened to him, for he saw how severely the king of Aram was oppressing Israel." And then we read that God gave them a deliverer. We are not told who this deliverer was, but it is likely that it was the king of Assyria (Adadnirari III 810-783BC) who attacked Damascus and thus took the pressure off Israel. And so, much like Stalin (an evil king if there ever was one) taking some of the pressure off the Western Allies by forcing an Eastern Front, the Assyrian king helped Israel merely by keeping the King of Aram too busy to attack the Northern Kingdom. This is, of course, an oversimplification, but it would not be the first or last time God uses an evil power to deliver His People.
