First Institute of Coptic Studies Inaugurated at University of Alexandria

With an unprecedented initiative, Egyptian political institutions have decided to invest resources to support the opening of institutes, centers, and departments in public universities dedicated to the study and enhancement of the Coptic language and cultural heritage, according to Fides News Agency. The first institute of Coptic Studies was already inaugurated at the University of Alexandria, in collaboration with the Coptic Orthodox Church. A similar initiative is being undertaken at the faculty of artistic studies of the University of Damanhour. Even the buildings intended to house these institutions have been designed, inspired by the typical forms of Coptic architecture.

The so-called “Coptic age” is identified by scholars as a time of transition between the era of the pharaohs and that of the Arab-Islamic civilization. And it is referred to as a constitutive element of Egyptian culture and identity. In recent days, during a project presentation conference, Professor Ghada Mousa, Dean of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Alessandria, explained that the Institute of Coptic Studies cultivates the systematic and academic study of Coptic language and literature, of the history of antiquity and of Coptic artistic expressions, taking care of the assignment of specialization diplomas and research doctorates.

Laus tibi Christe --- this looks kinda good! The invading Arab Muslims did their damnedest 1400 years ago to wipe out Coptic people, history, and culture --- to make it as if they had never existed. Inshallah.

If the Powers That Be are now into resurrecting Coptic culture and heritage --- in collaboration with the Coptic Orthodox Church, no less--- that really is some mind-blowing news.

So if there is a Coptic Orthodox Church, is there a Coptic Catholic Church (rite)? Excluding modern missionary activity??

Yes, there is a Coptic Catholic Church (Wiki Link)

Whether they are original-Catholics, original-Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox ("Miaphysite") ("Non-Chalcedonian"), or something else, depends on whether you think the Egyptian Churches were Catholic or Orthodox (or what?) from the git-go.

I personally would say Catholic-Orthodox, with a couple of translation glitches. "One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism" --- so I always hope for the best.

Interesting. Having just joined the Church in 2006, a lot of these intricacies I am as yet unfamiliar with. I do know enough to know that the whole "Amazonian schtick" is ludicrous on its face.

The whole "Amazonian schtick" is a big step in the intentional controlled demolition of the Catholic Church.

Conceived and implemented, in large part, by that great indigenous Amazonian aboriginal shaman, Cardinal Walter Kasper.

Ugh. We should be fasting. Our Lord said that some demons cannot be cast out except by prayer and fasting.

I will edit your comment by adding one word....."attempted" before "controlled". The laity is no longer a mass of poorly educated peasants these days.

"Somewhere" in my mass of reading before joining the Church, I saw the statement that the true test of magisterium is NOT the words and actions of the Pope and/or leadership, but whether the body of Christ accepts the changes, or, like the cancer it really is, rejects it.

We have God's own word on't. "The gates of Hell shall not prevail...".

Thank you for that essential point.

I remember reading that when St. Thomas More, standing almost alone amidst England's chancellors and prelates, concluded that Henry VIII was just *wrong* on the matter Catherine and Anne, he based this not on his "private conscience" nor his own interpretation of Scripture, nor even on the word of the Pope, but on the fact that all of Christendom would have thought such a divorce/remarriage impossible.

Even if every damn capon bishop in Britain was persuadable, More still knew that it was not in conformity with Christ and Christ's Church.

But still, Christ himself wondered, "When the Son of Man returns, will He find Faith on earth?"

Brother, we need to fast.

It was the scholar Jean-François Champollion, who studied the Coptic language, and used parts of it to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics.
