NEW YORK - Following President Donald Trumps plans to deport millions of undocumented migrants, the United States Conference of Catholic bishops (USCCB) released a statement acknowledging that nations have a right to protect their borders, while urging attention toward the root causes of migration.
That response sparked an online fury that continued through last weekend criticizing the bishops reaction as tepid and lacking the moral outrage merited by the situation.
We recognize the right of nations to control their borders in a just and proportionate manner. However, broad enforcement actions instigate panic in our communities and will not serve as an effective deterrent to irregular migration, wrote Bishop Jose Vásquez, bishop of Austin and chair of the USCCB Committee on Migration in a statement on Saturday.
Instead, we should focus on the root causes in Central America that have compelled so many to leave their homes in search of safety and reform our immigration system with a view toward justice and the common good. We stand ready to work with the Administration and Congress to achieve those objectives, said Vásquez.
During this unsettling time, we offer our prayers and support to our brothers and sisters, regardless of their immigration status, and recognizing their inherent dignity as children of God, he concluded.
In response, Church historian and theologian Massimo Faggioli tweeted: This is worse than saying nothing.

I vote for arming half of the military-age males and returning them to their home countries to deal with the drug cartels and tyrants in their home countries. The other half can be hired at minimum wage for a CCC-like operation to build the wall that is needed to eliminate the danger of traveling to the U.S. by eliminating the hole in our national defenses.
Catholic Charities makes MANY MILLIONS of DOLLARS each year for PLACING ILLEGALS ALIENS through the country!
Sounds like a good plan.
Law abiding citizens and
US law enforcement authorities are targeting criminals.
If you are a criminal,
you may be legally apprehended by law enforcement
and held by force until the legal jurisdictional authority
arrives to process you.
The USCCB also tried to sabotage Pope John Paul II and did everything they could to undermine his programs.
They also fought to proect and cover up for homosexual priests.
President Trump is far more honest and trustworthy than they are.
The question of borders and immigration is a political one, not a religious one. Why are the bishops saying anything at all?
Note also, being a political question, the Catholic faithful are not bound in any way to follow their lead.
Not my problem. If they're illegal, let them panic. Maybe they'll be motivated to self-deport.
and will not serve as an effective deterrent to irregular migration,
Nonsense.
The most effective flak comes
in the form of empty collection baskets.
Root causes--like Jesuit support for Daniel Ortega who is now persecuting Nicaraguan Catholics, for instance?
