Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

1 Kings 16

Omri King of Israel

21 Then the people of Israel were split into two factions; half supported Tibni son of Ginath for king, and the other half supported Omri. 22 But Omri’s followers proved stronger than those of Tibni son of Ginath. So Tibni died and Omri became king.

23 In the thirty-first year of Asa king of Judah, Omri became king of Israel, and he reigned twelve years, six of them in Tirzah. 24 He bought the hill of Samaria from Shemer for two talents[a] of silver and built a city on the hill, calling it Samaria, after Shemer, the name of the former owner of the hill.

25 But Omri did evil in the eyes of the Lord and sinned more than all those before him. 26 He followed completely the ways of Jeroboam son of Nebat, committing the same sin Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit, so that they aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, by their worthless idols.

27 As for the other events of Omri’s reign, what he did and the things he achieved, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 28 Omri rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria. And Ahab his son succeeded him as king.

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

Omri ruled twelve years. When a nation has an evil ruler, it can seem like an eternity.

To ALWAYS Worship The CREATOR, not the creation,
To fix our minds upon You, Not upon the Earth.

that They Will Look to You for the Protection
and Prosperity of their Nation.
We Also Pray For Revival in our own Beloved USA.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

I have a confession to make. The first time I read the entire Bible from Beginning to End, I was horribly bored and confused by these chapters. One bad king after another, leapfrogging reigns between the Northern and Southern Kingdoms, each administration being worse than the one before it, idolatry, incest, fratricide, child sacrifice, etc. It was pretty disturbing, and not at all what I expected my "Daily Devotional Reading" to be.

Of course, that was nearly forty years ago, and, although my personal Bible was the New American Standard Bible, the language was still a bit old-fashioned. Not as tough-going as the KJV, but I think you know what I mean.

Anyway, since I go through this section at least once a year, I have probably read it over thirty-five times at this point, in many translations.

Still, I keep finding new things! My $8.00 Nantasket Yard Sale NIV Study Bible (Bound in Genuine Luxurious Corinthian Bonded Leather!) carried an interesting footnote:

"Recent Archaeological Finds in Samaria have confirmed that Omri built a palace there that was nearly as fine as Solomon's"

WOW! So even this somewhat distasteful bit in the middle of the history of Israel is revealed and confirmed by the "Scientific Method". Today's thread will be illustrated with pictures from those digs.

This little Scripture Portion also tells us of the founding of Samaria by wicked, evil, murderous, idolatrous King Omri. It was Omri who bought the land, built his city on a hill there, constructed his own palaces and cult center, and named the town after its previous owner. The people of the area would forever be tarred with Omri's brush, and are separate from the Jewish People to this day. They have their own way of worship, their own Torah, and still offer sacrifices that ceased in Jerusalem when the Temple was destroyed.

In Jesus time, the Samaritans were still marginalized people. Pious Jews would not even pass through Samaritan Territory, but instead take the long way around, even on foot. That is why Jesus's conversation with a Samaritan Woman (John 4) is so remarkable. Also Jesus made a point of including Samaritans in His Parables, often making them the heroes of the story.

Today, the part of Israel known as the "West Bank" by the world, is actually named "Judea & Samaria" by the Israelis.

And it all goes back to this verse in the Bible.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

“You are like light for the whole world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead it is put on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)
