Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

1 Kings 16

16 Then the word of the Lord came to Jehu son of Hanani concerning Baasha: 2 “I lifted you up from the dust and appointed you ruler over my people Israel, but you followed the ways of Jeroboam and caused my people Israel to sin and to arouse my anger by their sins. 3 So I am about to wipe out Baasha and his house, and I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat. 4 Dogs will eat those belonging to Baasha who die in the city, and birds will feed on those who die in the country.”

5 As for the other events of Baasha’s reign, what he did and his achievements, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 6 Baasha rested with his ancestors and was buried in Tirzah. And Elah his son succeeded him as king.

7 Moreover, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Jehu son of Hanani to Baasha and his house, because of all the evil he had done in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger by the things he did, becoming like the house of Jeroboam—and also because he destroyed it.

Even with the splitting of the kingdom, civil war, and evil kings, God "kept the lamp burning" by providing prophets who spoke for Him.

Our Father in Heaven,
How Blessed and Glorious is Your Most Wonderful and Holy Name!
How Perfect Your Plan and Your Promise,
And How Magnificent Your Precepts and Your Provision.
You See The Beginning From The End,
And The End from The Beginning.
You Are Not Bound By Time And Space,
Because You Created Them in The First Place!
We are so quick to second-guess Your Plan,
to try an "figure You out", to "Put You on Our Schedule",
When what we SHOULD do is Fall on our faces before You and Worship You,
With Our Whole Heart,
Our Whole Mind,
and Our Whole Being!

We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According to Your Will and Promise.
We Pray For the People and Leaders of Israel,
that They Will Look to You for the Protection
and Prosperity of their Nation.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The above graphic, from Wikipedia, is described as "Asa destroying the idols". I don't think that is the whole story. Looking at the picture, which is from a hand-illuminated Bible from the Middle Ages, I clearly see a king offering his living child on an altar. He is poking the child with an axe, and the look of horror on the child's face is clearly evident. This makes sense, as God says through His prophets that it is this VERY sin that offends Him the most. It is so offensive, God says, that it never even entered His Mind that anyone would do such a thing!

Although we may smugly say that such things are not done today, be advised that my next sentence may offend some people. When I looked at this picture, it reminded me of two things.

First, the horrible practice of abortion in our country. The bad king could easily be an abortionist, poking his lance into an unborn child.

The second thing was a more current development in the degradation of our culture: Little boys dressed as girls being placed up on a table by their own parents and forced to do a seductive dance for adult males, and even posting these images online.

Although in the second scenario the child is not actually murdered, I can't imagine the torture and suffering inflicted upon that child's soul and spirit.

So, before we get all self-righteous about the behavior of these wicked kings, let us read and reflect upon the ultimate fate of those nations that practiced such evil. Let us also take heart that God promised that the "Lamp Will Not Go Out". He always will provide someone who will speak for Him even in the midst of such depravity. And, God has also promised that He will ALWAYS have a remnant of those who seek Him.
