Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

1 Kings 15

Nadab King of Israel

25 Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years. 26 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, following the ways of his father and committing the same sin his father had caused Israel to commit.

27 Baasha son of Ahijah from the tribe of Issachar plotted against him, and he struck him down at Gibbethon, a Philistine town, while Nadab and all Israel were besieging it. 28 Baasha killed Nadab in the third year of Asa king of Judah and succeeded him as king.

29 As soon as he began to reign, he killed Jeroboam’s whole family. He did not leave Jeroboam anyone that breathed, but destroyed them all, according to the word of the Lord given through his servant Ahijah the Shilonite. 30 This happened because of the sins Jeroboam had committed and had caused Israel to commit, and because he aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel.

31 As for the other events of Nadab’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 32 There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns.

Baasha King of Israel

33 In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king of all Israel in Tirzah, and he reigned twenty-four years. 34 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, following the ways of Jeroboam and committing the same sin Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit.

Footnotes:

1. 1 Kings 15:1 Some Hebrew manuscripts and Septuagint (see also 2 Chron. 12:16); most Hebrew manuscripts Abijam; also in verses 7 and 8
2. 1 Kings 15:2 A variant of Absalom; also in verse 10
3. 1 Kings 15:6 Some Hebrew manuscripts and Syriac Abijam (that is, Abijah); most Hebrew manuscripts Rehoboam

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

Meanwhile, in the northern Kingdom, there is a different series of kings. Some of these were real "beauts" as we shall see. Their reigns overlap the Kings of Judah, and that is where many Bible readers stumble through this section.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Wow...this is the exact one!

In my little Boston neighborhood where I grew up in the 50's, every family was one of three things. It was easy to tell who's what by the decor. Catholics had a Crucifix on the wall somewhere. Jewish kids had a candlesticks on the dining room table. Protestants had a big 20 pound King James Bible with a full-color portrait of Jesus (usually Salman's "Head of Christ") on the front cover. We all played together and went into each other's houses, so these little details were very useful to a curious kid like me.

I was about eight, and found myself alone in my friend's living room with the 20 pound Bible. There it was...sitting on the coffee table, with Jesus staring at me with those big brown eyes. What secrets were in that Book? I shouldn't touch it...it wasn't MINE, and I was told NOT to mess with grown-up stuff like that.

I looked around me...no one around...and I inched my way over to the Book. Somehow my hand flipped it open, and I read it. It was Today's Passage! YIKES! That was not a very good introduction to God's Word! I read about these awful kings of Israel and the terrible things they did.

Then I heard my friend's Mom come into the room. I closed the Book and quickly covered up my transgression with childish pleasantries. And that was that.

It is 60 years later, and I still remember not only the incident, but the feelings that went with it. It is a perfect example of taking Scriptures out of context and assuming the Bible says something that it does not. On either side of this chapter are statements about prophets and men of God who advise, cajole, and chastise these awful kings. One of the worst kings coming up is Ahab, and he wrestles with one of God's GREATEST Prophets, Elijah. The worse things get, the more we see God intervening. He promised David that "The Lamp Would Not Go Out", and soon we will see examples of that.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV)

Good story—which is why we need to read the whole thing. And you’re doing these ongoing series.

Joining in prayer, left that other site, for the Peace of Jerusalem.
