The Uighurs have separatist notions. The Catholics do not. They just want the State to leave them alone to worship God as they choose.

But totalitarian regimes cannot tolerate any alternative focus of allegiance whatsoever. They need the country to be an undifferentiated anthill.

That’s why I’m surprised they even let the Pretense of allowing Catholicism to exist.
