Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

1 Kings 4

Solomon’s Daily Provisions

20 The people of Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand on the seashore; they ate, they drank and they were happy. 21 And Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates River to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. These countries brought tribute and were Solomon’s subjects all his life.

22 Solomon’s daily provisions were thirty cors[a] of the finest flour and sixty cors[b] of meal, 23 ten head of stall-fed cattle, twenty of pasture-fed cattle and a hundred sheep and goats, as well as deer, gazelles, roebucks and choice fowl. 24 For he ruled over all the kingdoms west of the Euphrates River, from Tiphsah to Gaza, and had peace on all sides. 25 During Solomon’s lifetime Judah and Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, lived in safety, everyone under their own vine and under their own fig tree.

26 Solomon had four[c] thousand stalls for chariot horses, and twelve thousand horses.[d]

27 The district governors, each in his month, supplied provisions for King Solomon and all who came to the king’s table. They saw to it that nothing was lacking. 28 They also brought to the proper place their quotas of barley and straw for the chariot horses and the other horses.

It was not just Solomon who prospered, but his whole Nation.

And How Magnificent Your Precepts and Your Provision.
You See The Beginning From The End,
And The End from The Beginning.

We are so quick to second-guess Your Plan,
to try an "figure You out",
to "Put You on Our Schedule",
When what we SHOULD do is
Fall on our Faces Before You and Worship You,

According to Your Will and Promise.
We Pray For the People and Leaders of Israel,
that They Will Look to You for the Protection

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

John F. Kennedy is often credited with the saying: "A Rising Tide Lifts All the Boats." This, of course, is a compliment to the Free-Market Economy, as the prosperity of a culture lifts up everyone. There are still, of course, poor people, but in general, even the poorest are better off than in some other countries.

If I recall correctly, Ronald Reagan used the same expression, attributing it to JFK, when discussing "Trickle-Down Economics".

Of course, this flies in the face of Socialism, which is presented as a "zero-sum game." In order for the poor to rise, something has to be removed from those who have money. And, since it is not in human nature to accept such a situation, there has to be a "Central Control" to force the issue. And then, everybody is equal...that is, Equally MISERABLE.

A little research shows that "A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats" has its origin in early Twentieth Century Christian Missionary publications, particularly among African-American Churches. It may have also been a proverb in seafaring communities before it ended up in these publications. Whatever its origin, it makes perfect sense!

The principle behind this proverb is expressed beautifully in today's Reading. When Solomon ruled with wisdom and integrity, everybody prospered. It didn't matter that Solomon was a Billionaire, because his wise and peaceful regime caused everyone to be able to sit under their own fig tree (property rights?) and live in harmony no matter their income level.

There is one little caveat here. As stated, Solomon began to collect horses. As we will find out later, he was also collecting wives. These were both in defiance of a warning to kings way back in Deuteronomy 17:16.

That was one situation in which Solomon wasn't so smart!

And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.

And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.

And those officers provided victual for king Solomon, and for all that came unto king Solomon's table, every man in his month: they lacked nothing.

Barley also and straw for the horses and dromedaries brought they unto the place where the officers were, every man according to his charge.

And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.

And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt.

For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about.

And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.

And he spake of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of creeping things, and of fishes.

And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom.
