Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

2 Samuel 24

David Builds an Altar

18 On that day Gad went to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” 19 So David went up, as the Lord had commanded through Gad. 20 When Araunah looked and saw the king and his officials coming toward him, he went out and bowed down before the king with his face to the ground.

21 Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?”

“To buy your threshing floor,” David answered, “so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped.”

22 Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take whatever he wishes and offer it up. Here are oxen for the burnt offering, and here are threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood. 23 Your Majesty, Araunah[d] gives all this to the king.” Araunah also said to him, “May the Lord your God accept you.”

24 But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”

So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels[e] of silver for them. 25 David built an altar to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then the Lord answered his prayer in behalf of the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped.

Oh LORD, Our God,
How Excellent is Your Name over All The Earth!
The Heavens Declare Your Glory,
And All of Your Creation Sings Your Praises!
Holy, Righteous, Just, and True,
Who is Like You?
There is No Other.

Help Us To Worship You in Spirit and In Truth,
And not just "go through the motions", risking Your Great Wrath.
For We Know You Would Rather us to Be COLD than to be "lukewarm hypocrites".
But You WANT us to be "on FIRE for You!

We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According to Your Will and Promise.
We Pray For the People and Leaders of Israel,
that They Will Look to You for the Protection
and Prosperity of their Nation.
We Also Pray For Revival in our own Beloved USA.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Way back in the 20th Century (I know. That sound weird.) I went to Real Estate School to get my license. Much like the first "basic practical" course for a CCW, the course was not so much about "HOW TO" (sell real estate, shoot proficiently, etc.), but was more like "WHAT YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DO". Now, both firearms and real estate can get complicated, and there are probably more LAWS about them than there are houses to sell or guns to shoot!

Anyway, for the sale of Real Estate to be a legal transfer of property rights, certain elements must be clearly stated:

1. The Name of the Seller
2. The Name of The Buyer
3. A Description of the Property
4. The Amount Paid for the Property

In addition, the transaction needs to be registered at the local "Registry of Deeds" which is usually located at City Hall or some other recognized Public Building. Before the days of microfilm and computers, these registrations filled giant, musty, yellowing books that took up huge amounts of shelf space, but they were THERE and that is what is important.

Because of the awful plague used to punish David for his transgression of numbering his fighting men, an Angel appeared over Arunah's Threshing Floor. David chose this particular place to build an altar to God, and the rest is History. The little passage at the end of 2 Samuel contains these details:

1. The Name of the Seller (Arunah The Jebusite)
2. The Name of The Buyer (King David)
3. A Description of the Property (The Threshing Floor on the top of the hill outside of the City of David)
4. The Amount Paid for the Property (Fifty Shekels of Silver)

The Bible, which has endured for over 3000 YEARS has this Transaction duly recorded for posterity, and has lasted longer than any "City Hall" in History.

Now, it is a belief that this site where Arunah was crushing his grain was also the famous site of Mount Moriah, where Abraham was commanded to sacrifice Isaac, his son. I did not see this in the 2 Samuel passage, so I did a little research. The connection is made in 2 Chronicles 3:1: (English Standard Version)

Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the LORD had appeared to David his father, at the place that David had appointed, on the threshing floor of Ornan(Arunah) the Jebusite.

Thus, there is a connection to the awesome and frightening Test of Abraham's Faith, on this very spot.

Abraham himself bought some real Estate in nearby Hebron. Once again the Bible faithfully fulfills the Real Estate Transaction Rules:

1. The Name of the Seller (Ephron the Hittite)
2. The Name of The Buyer (Abraham )
3. A Description of the Property (The Cave of Machpela and Adjacent Property, Hebron, in the Land of Canaan)
4. The Amount Paid for the Property (For Hundred Shekels of Silver)

(Genesis Chapter 23 verses 1-20.(Masoretic Text:)

And the life of Sarah was a hundred and seven and twenty years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. And Sarah died in Kiriath Arba--the same is Hebron--in the land of Canaan; and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.

And Abraham rose up from before his dead, and spoke unto the children of Heth, saying: "I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a burying-place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight."

And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying unto him: "Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us; in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead."

And Abraham rose up, and bowed down to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth. And he spoke with them, saying: "If it be your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and entreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar, that he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for the full price let him give it to me in the midst of you for a possession of a burying-place."

Now Ephron was sitting in the midst of the children of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the children of Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying: "Nay, my lord, hear me: the field give I thee, and the cave that is therein, I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee; bury thy dead."

And Abraham bowed down before the people of the land. And he spoke unto Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying: "But if thou wilt, I pray thee, hear me: I will give the price of the field; take it of me, and I will bury my dead there."

And Ephron answered Abraham, saying unto him: "My lord, hearken unto me: a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver, what is that betwixt me and thee? bury therefore thy dead."

And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the hearing of the children of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant.

So the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the border thereof round about, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city.

And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre--the same is Hebron--in the land of Canaan. And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a burying-place by the children of Heth.

Like David's purchase, this Real Estate Transaction is Duly recorded in The Holy Bible!

OK...here's another one!

(Jeremiah 32 NIV) 6 While Jeremiah was a prisoner, he said, “This message from the Lord came to me. This was the message: 7 ‘Jeremiah, your cousin, Hanamel, will come to you soon. He is the son of your uncle Shallum. Hanamel will say to you, “Jeremiah, buy my field near the town of Anathoth. Buy it because you are my nearest relative. It is your right and your responsibility to buy that field.”’

8 “Then it happened just as the Lord said. My cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard. Hanamel said to me, ‘Jeremiah, buy my field near the town of Anathoth, in the land of the tribe of Benjamin. Buy that land for yourself because it is your right to buy it and own it.’”

So I knew that this was a message from the Lord. 9 I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel. I weighed out 17 shekels[b] of silver for him. 10 I signed the deed and had a copy of the deed sealed up.[c] I got some men to witness what I had done, and I weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 Then I took the sealed copy of the deed, which contained the demands and limits of my purchase, and the copy that was not sealed. 12 I gave the deed to Baruch son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah. I did this while my cousin Hanamel and the other witnesses were there. They also signed the deed. There were also many people of Judah sitting in the courtyard who saw me give the deed to Baruch.

13 With all the people watching, I said to Baruch, 14 “This is what the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says: ‘Take both copies of the deed—the sealed copy and the copy that was not sealed—and put them in a clay jar. Do this so that these deeds will last a long time.’ 15 The Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says, ‘In the future my people will once again buy houses, fields, and vineyards in the land of Israel.’”



1. The Name of the Seller (Cousin Hanamel)
2. The Name of The Buyer The Prophet Jeremiah)
3. A Description of the Property (Hanamel's field near the town of Anathoth, in the land of the tribe of Benjamin.)
4. The Amount Paid for the Property (17 Shekels of Silver)

The deed is then sealed in a clay jar, because Jeremiah knows that Israel is about to be exiled. This purchase was an extreme act of Faith that the People of Israel would one day return to their homeland.

And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
