FULL TITLE: Tennessee pastor who was facing 72 years in prison for repeatedly raping his adopted daughter, 14, is jailed for just 12 after dozens of parishioners show up to court to support him
A former Tennessee pastor who repeatedly raped his adopted teenage daughter has been given an effective 12 year prison sentence after dozens of parishioners showed up to court to support him.
Prosecutors had sought the maximum term of 72 years behind bars for 41-year-old David Richards, The Knoxville News Sentinel reports.
But a judge cited his longtime ministry and the support he still receives as mitigating factors after more than 30 people showed up to support Richards at the sentencing last week.
Knox County Criminal Court Judge Steve Sword also pointed to the fact he had started a Bible study for fellow inmates at the Knox County Detention Facility.
The victim was 16 when she reported the abuse by her sole guardian, saying it began two years earlier.
Amber Richards, who chose to speak publicly after the February verdicts, said in her victim impact statement: 'I wanted to throw my body away.'

I read a different article about this same crime. Apparently, investigators found some of his seminal fluid on the bed frame.
OK...I posted my last before I saw this one of yours...
It sounds like they did find evidence...The bed stripped and his phone reset to get rid of messages...
Yes, but after the "mattress stripped bare" I somehow saw "unable" in there when it wasn't actually in there.
I think the way it was worded discombobulated me. When someone says "she told them where they could find DNA", and then follow it with "the mattress was stripped bare", I was expecting an "unable" to follow.
My mistake. I am wrong. I am incorrect.
Jim Jones was communist
That certainly makes her story appear more likely to be true. I wonder why his congregation isn't convinced?
You're making excuses for this sexual predator just like those deluded parishioners.
“I read a different article about this same crime. Apparently, investigators found some of his seminal fluid on the bed frame”
I will ask again “what the hell?”
cool it! DiogenesLamp understands now
I saw that because that was what I was expecting to see after I read "her mattress stripped bare."
I just read it too fast, and the way they phrased it made it feel as if they had failed.
I've got it now. They did find his DNA.
nobody from the church showed up to support the VICTIM? Seriously? What ‘church’ was this?
No problem...I made a mistake once, I think...*LOL*
(my wife just said, “yeah...Once an hour...”)
Yes, I now think he's guilty, and the congregation is nuts.
Of course if I had put my trust in someone as a man of God, I would be loath to believe ill of them without very good proof. I think the DNA ought to be good enough, and I don't understand why the congregation thinks differently.
You get large points for that.
Admitting errors is entirely
too rare on this site.
I’m going to ask what sort of problem this story poses for the left in this country because our media aren’t reporting it, we have to hear it from the UK Daily Mail.
I’m not seeing it. This looks tailor made for MSM demagoguery.
I've noticed I have been making a lot more mistakes as the years have been passing. Brain's a lot fuzzier than it used to be.
I think I need to get more sleep and more exercise, and quit worrying so much about politics and other things beyond my ability to change.
When I'm clearly in the wrong, I feel compelled to make it quite clear that I acknowledge that I was wrong. Pretending I'm not wrong when I am, is just lying to myself, and I try to make a point of never lying to myself.
I blew this one. I read the article too quickly and I just missed the salient part.
We are all getting there, my FRiend....
I had an employee whose English was passable,
but when caught in wrongdoing, his accent
would get so bad, he couldn’t communicate
at all. I had another one who would argue
with you, and his voice got louder as
it dawned on him he was wrong. ;)
