Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

2 Samuel 21

Wars Against the Philistines

15 Once again there was a battle between the Philistines and Israel. David went down with his men to fight against the Philistines, and he became exhausted. 16 And Ishbi-Benob, one of the descendants of Rapha, whose bronze spearhead weighed three hundred shekels[b] and who was armed with a new sword, said he would kill David. 17 But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to David’s rescue; he struck the Philistine down and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, saying, “Never again will you go out with us to battle, so that the lamp of Israel will not be extinguished.”

18 In the course of time, there was another battle with the Philistines, at Gob. At that time Sibbekai the Hushathite killed Saph, one of the descendants of Rapha.

19 In another battle with the Philistines at Gob, Elhanan son of Jair[c] the Bethlehemite killed the brother of[d] Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver’s rod.

20 In still another battle, which took place at Gath, there was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He also was descended from Rapha. 21 When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of Shimeah, David’s brother, killed him.

22 These four were descendants of Rapha in Gath, and they fell at the hands of David and his men.

When the Disney Company animated the myths and legends of the Ancient Hawaiians in the movie "Moana", there were criticisms by the overly health-conscious that the god Maui had been depicted as "morbidly obese", an unhealthy role-model for children, and an unacceptable ethnic stereotype. (yeah. blah blah blah. you know what I'm sayin'. It's ALWAYS something.) Anyway, what they didn't seem to realize is that Polynesians, in general, tend to be LARGE People, and like it that way. The only REAL Queen in American History, Queen Liliʻuokalani, (who, by the way was also a Songwriter and a Christian) was a formidable-looking woman, with broad, strong, shoulders and a huge frame. However, she never looks "obese" in the old photos. She just looks BIG. All over Hawaii are life-size statues of the Great King Kamehameha, which if accurate, show that he too was a giant.

The Philistine warriors in this brief chapter though, are more than just big people. The author of 2 Samuel takes great pains to tell us that these warriors were aberrations of some sort, some with extra fingers and toes, and describes their possessions and weapons to further the description of these freaky fighters.

But they were not just a few of these "giants". In fact, the discussion of "giants" in the land goes all the way back to Genesis 6, through Exodus when the spies cowered in fear over "the giants in the land", and the classic story of David and Goliath, whose namesake is also in this chapter.

Giants are not a myth. The Philistines were probably large people to begin with, and chose the biggest among them to be their warriors, much like the NBA picks Basketball Players. The point is that Giants LOOK intimidating, but in reality, they are just people.

An interesting note here is that one of David's bodyguard decides that David has done enough fighting and must be protected for the good of the Nation., so that "The Lamp of God will not go out in Israel." This is, in effect, a prophetic utterance, as the Light of The World will be born a millennium later, from the Lineage of David.
