In response to pending bill requiring Catholic priests to report child sex abuse learned about through the sacrament, priests insist on upholding sacred trust.
California state Sen. Jerry Hill introduced a bill to the state Legislature on Feb. 20 that would require Catholic priests to report child sex abuse learned about in the confessional. The clergy and more than 40 other professions are already mandatory reporters there, but crimes disclosed during confession have been exempt. According to Hill, The exemption for clergy only protects the abuser and places children at further risk. The bill is currently awaiting a hearing.
Although a similar law was passed in South Australia last October, bishops and priests there have publicly vowed never to break the seal of the confessional. Quoting canon law, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: ... It is a crime for a confessor in any way to betray a penitent by word or in any other manner or for any reason. A priest, therefore, cannot break the seal to save his own life, to protect his good name, to refute a false accusation, to save the life of another, to aid the course of justice (like reporting a crime), or to avert a public calamity (2490). Automatic excommunication is incurred on any priest breaking that seal.
Adding fuel to the fire, Father James E. Connell of the Milwaukee Archdiocese, a canon lawyer and advocate for victims/survivors of sexual abuse, wrote in a recent commentary that it is time to modify the Churchs seal of the confessional for abuse of minors. He acknowledged that the law against a priest revealing sins told in confession can be found at least by the 12th century but said that public penances were once imposed for grave sins. According to him, that proves......

the new testament is part of the bible. What does it mean in John Whose sins you shall forgive they are forgiven. Whose sions you shall retain they bare retained?
Are the apostles not comparable to modern day priests. We know Jesus said do this in memory of me about the last supper. Isn’t the forgiveness statement the same thing.
Are these admonitions not meant to be passed down through the next generations??
Sins are sins. Crimes are crimes.
Romans 13:1
“Are the apostles not comparable to modern day priests.”
No. Where in the Bible does it say they are?
The connection is through peter You know the first catholic pope. Disciple of Christ/
I can’t believe you don’t know this. You do admit the new testament is “biblical” or do you not?
Do you deny that the bible says what i said it says? Whosoever you forgive?
Im not going top chase your tail as you run around in a circle and spin?
The winning post!
I never heard Peter call Jesus’ Church as the Catholic Church nor is it in the Bible.
in Romans 16:16 There is a scripture that calls them the Churches of Christ.
This is what I knew would happen. Word play and spin. Good bye
Where did I lie?

Ocasio-Cortez Calls for Socialist, Government-Controlled Banking System nice little Catholic gal..
Pope Francis sends pennies to his migrants stuck in Mexico ... meanwhile ‘we the people’ (some here refer to US as the ‘state’ or a camel's nose under their tent). And even some of them advocate ‘fixing’ our Constitution... What will the first right be protection of the confessional?
In 2001 W. ‘compassionate conservative’ Bush opened up our treasury to so called ‘faith based’ charities..... Does anyone have a clue the actual dollar amount ‘Catholic Charities’ have reaped since 2001, from ‘we the people’, or as some call the ‘state’, for human trafficking?
That unholy man housed in a WALLED museum and his https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=vatican+serpent+temple&view=detail&mid=CD706582C60BD995FF83CD706582C60BD995FF83&FORM=VIRE is flush with cash from US to make US a third world nation. Ah, this dedication to the Serpent was done in the 70’s... and people claim God's
Pope Francis went political against ‘we the people’ when he showed up to mass south of our border.
This ‘privilege’ of shielding criminal acts, is not limited to US citizens ... How many ‘illegals’, routinely show up to confess and then zip right back across the border.
By the way ... it does appear there is a willing ignorance to what the US Catholic Bishop routinely lobby for... Are they using tax payer (cough cough ) for their indulgences?
For those of you whose first doctrine is whining about being hated ... It might behoove you to find out what it is that God hates...
Proverbs 6:
13He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
14Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.
15Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.
16These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
IF I, a US citizen is going to be charged a fee, so a religious/political denomination can act against this nation's interest ... I have the God given right to speak out.
The nastiest remarks I have gotten have come from those that preen their holiness. I just love it, when the holy people, subtly or right in my face expose their inner beings.
Do you all think the powers that be, devised a plot to cash in trafficking humans and making US pay for it is Christian?
First step on a slippery slope.
Good. The free exercise of religion is not superseded by the district attorney’s prosecutorial interest in an individual possible case.
There are many ways to catch abusers, sacred confession being probably the least likely while subverting the church to theoretical ideas of law. It would be the ‘letter of a law’ and the absolute denial of real justice.
Point: these anti-Catholic proposals violate the religious rights of 2 individuals: the priest and the penitent!
Despite the rampant detestation of Catholicism, the Church has the right to freedom of religion equal to your freedom of speech to summarily bash it.
There’s a name for that, something like contingent or conditional absolution. Priests gives absolution the efficacy of which depends upon penitent’s compliance with order to turn himself in. That is NOT the penance! It is a command justly made by sacerdotal authority.
Your church has no God given right to my tax dollars to transform this Blessed nation into a third world hell hole. Rome's sovereignty does NOT trump my God given rights. At least have the grace to thank US tax payers for feeding, housing, and educating your members.
Confession to a priest is not Biblical. James 5:16.
