The confirmation class at First United Methodist Church in Omaha wanted to take a stand against the denominations longtime ban on same-sex marriage and gay clergy.
So when it came time to join the church on Sunday the traditional end to a yearlong exploration of their faith the class, made up of eight middle-schoolers, said no.
Their decision was in response to a vote at Februarys United Methodist General Conference in St. Louis affirming the denominations rules against ordination of gay clergy and performing same-sex weddings on church property. U.S. delegates to the conference, for the most part, favored a modification of the rules that would give individual churches the right to decide, but others from Africa and Russia pushed the vote to retain the churchwide ban. The churchs Judicial Council has since upheld the ban.

A generalization: the kids -— Methodist, Catholic, Evangelical, whatever -—are, for the most part, not well catechized. The adult generation is more to blame for this than they are.
Well, in an attempt to avoid that for the most part generalization, we are going to have a go at attending a small but very friendly Russian Orthodox parish(?) here on alternate weekends when Latin Mass is not available. No Communion and no conversion, of course, but otherwise they seem very welcoming.** I have explained to the grandkids that our participation is not prohibited by the Catholic Church, and these two branches of Christianity did not split mainly* over theological differences. Comments?
* Yes, I know one can consult Wikipedia or other source and find a list of theological differences. But upon reading these my I find few if any that are salient to me and certainly not likely to endanger our Catholic faith or beliefs.
** I realize we as Catholics might not be welcomed to the same degree were the parish to be located in the Russian homeland.
Virtue signaling can be so ugly. It’s the epitome of pride, a deadly sin.
Omaha is where lesbian Charlie Rogers hoaxed the local and federal law enforcement community with a drawn out fake “hate crime” fiasco, costing weeks and tens of thousands of dollars in resources. She should be the face of the “gay” community there.
well thats gay,,,
Good riddance; they don’t know the Bible, and they don’t know Jesus.
LCMS kids are catechized for 3 years, have to memorize Luthers small catechism and have to appear before the congregation to answer questions about what they have learned. Not all churches do a poor job of educating their young adults.
If I read between the lines correctly it was the pastor, Kent Little, that led these kids to this action. He participates in the gay pride parade and disagrees with a ban gay clergy and same sex “marriage”.
What an opportunity to swing the pendulum. The parents applauded, too?
God help them.
I think you’re doing OK here. I can’t see a real objection. But others may disagree, and I’m here to learn.
This might have been unusual at the time, I don't know. I have to observe --- as an RCIA catechist --- that a LOT of our adults seem to be Biblically illiterate.
It's been dereliction of catechetical duty for generations.
I see that a big part of my job as "remedial catechist" is in trying to rectify that problem. I haven't done a good enough job even with my own kids :o(
(Kidding, ruefully, of course, "Bishop" is not an elective office.)
Ok then, burn in hell. Along with the adult who lead you down this path.
I wish for you it was. The faithful laity of your church might straighten a few things out if you had a voiced your leadership.
“the kids -— Methodist, Catholic, Evangelical, whatever -—are, for the most part, not well catechized. The adult generation is more to blame for this than they are.”
Exactly. In this case we see a bunch of middle school kids standing up for unmentionable perversion.
This reminds me of when you see some 1st grader write the president about global warming or something. You know it’s an adult using small human shields.
A voice in your leadership
abomination
No doubt in my mind that these teens got this from their parents and that congregation. All my Methodist relatives are nuts.
My family was Baptist and Hub’s was Methodist....I asked once what was the difference and someone said Methodists believed in drinking (moderately of course) and dancing. I thought to myself that wouldn’t be so bad since Baptist took the fun out of everything but I’m glad I’m still Baptist....back slidden as can be but still keep the faith and dance and drink a little but TRUE Baptist I would bet the farm would never accept the gay lifestyle. I’ll stay where I’m at........;)
So they went through a confirmation class that did not include biblical teachings? I suggest they depart the Methodist Church, rename their “church” and find something else to do with their time since God’s teachings are not acceptable to them. They will have a chance to explain it to God personally at some point. (Now they can be heroes in the same vein as that Hogg kid from Florida, darlings of the media and lunatic left)
“So they went through a confirmation class that did not include biblical teachings?”
Somehow I suspect they did and the kids don’t care because that is “hate speech”.
“No doubt in my mind that these teens got this from their parents and that congregation. All my Methodist relatives are nuts.”
My Granny was Methodist and they sure has H*** did not act nor believe in nonsense like this!
