More than 50 years ago, Catholic-schoolers like me vary rarely read the Bible. It hasn't gotten any better. Kids think that Jesus is Mr. Rogers.

As I remember, 55 years ago my whole Confirmation class was told by the priest that we had to each have a Bible (I was told "Ask for one for Christmas!") --- or we wouldn't be Confirmed.

This might have been unusual at the time, I don't know. I have to observe --- as an RCIA catechist --- that a LOT of our adults seem to be Biblically illiterate.

It's been dereliction of catechetical duty for generations.

I see that a big part of my job as "remedial catechist" is in trying to rectify that problem. I haven't done a good enough job even with my own kids :o(
